We saw lots of whales from the coastal path without necessarily having to go far from Gearing’s Point. The weather affects sightings-our final morning was windier and we saw nothing in an hour. Consider boat trips from the New Harbour in Hermanus to save the drive to and from Gansbaai. We saw hundreds of dolphins which swam right next to the boat for ages, a protracted and close encounter with a humpback whale and several southern rights with Hermanus Whale Watchers - we even glimpsed a Bryde’s whale and some seals. We stayed just one night for an early morning boat trip to do some whale watching. The whale watching itself was fabulous, and I would recommend that to anyone. Not having been to Hermanus before, I did not know what to expect of the town itself, but now wish that we had booked to stay a day or two longer. It was my first visit to Hermanus and I can't wait to return! We stayed in a holiday lodge right on the beachfront with a sea view right from our bed. We were past the busy touristy town area. If you continue driving past the town with the sea to your right, you will find this more upmarket area. From there, you can access the cliff path that lines the beaches and stretches for about 12 kilometers, linking it with the town and other areas. Hermanus is one of those rare places that manages to be both laid-back and full of life. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, it's a town that offers something for everyone — whether you're here for the whales, the wine, the walks, or just to breathe a little deeper. We love how walkable the centre of town is. From our apartment, you can stroll to coffee shops, the cliff path, boutique stores, and some of the best restaurants on the Cape coastline. Whale season (July to December) is truly magical, with sightings often possible from the shore. Even outside of that time, the natural beauty is something special — from Fernkloof Nature Reserve’s hiking trails to the stunning Hemel-en-Aarde wine route just a short drive away. Hermanus feels like a proper seaside village with soul. It’s not overdeveloped, yet has everything you need. People are friendly, the air is fresh, and the days somehow feel longer. We travel to Hermanus regularly to visit family. It is a beautiful location with stunning views of both beach and mountains. The town centre has a huge selection of cafes and restaurants, with lots of galleries and gift shops locally also. The town and cliff path are safe and so scenic.
