The stupendous Duomo of Orvieto is on top of the list of places to visit. The cathedral commemorates the Miracle of the Eucharist in Bolsena-droplets of blood that stained the altar linen, made some time in the1260’s. According to the Bradt Guide for Italy, Umbria & The Marche regions, “A Bohemian priest named Peter, was on his way to Rome, was asked to celebrate mass in Bolsena, just to the south. Father Peter had long been skeptical about the doctrine of the Host becoming the body of Christ during the mass, but the Host itself answered his doubts by dripping blood on the altar linen. Peter took the linen to the Pope (Urban IV) and he declared it a miracle and instituted the Feast of Corpus Christi. Pope Urban IV promised Orvieto (rather unfairly to Bolsena) a magnificent new cathedral. “
The exterior façade of this gothic cathedral, has mosaics depicting the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, etc. with stunning gold backgrounds, that glow in the afternoon sun. The interior has cycles of frescos throughout, painted Fra Angelico, Luca Signorelli, Perugino, Piero della Francesca, to name a few.
The other most remarkable attraction in Orvieto is the Viaggio nella “Città Sotterranea”, the Orvieto Underground tours. We took an fascinating, evening tour given in English by a local guide. Tours can be booked through an office near to the cathedral in Piazza Duomo. As the brochure notes “Orvieto Underground is the best way to become acquainted with this new, unusual aspect of a culture of a city that abounds in history and outstanding art treasures. The tour takes you along a winding subterranean path through tunnels, stairs, unexpected passageways, superimposed rooms, with innumerable small square niches, all of which bear witness to creation over the centuries of this “city underground”.

People who just do a day trip from Rome miss out on exploring the romantic little town and really getting a feeling for the history of it.
3 - 4 days is jsut right if you want to walk around the entire town once and do all the sightseeing and relax at the same time.
You will laugh, but my fridge was outside between my window and shutters, I had breakfast at my window and grabbed pizza as take away in town. I have got a fear to get lost in big cities - so Orvieto is perfect - you just stroll around everywhere and when you want to get hoem you ask : " Duomo ? " and peopl;e point you in the right direction. :)
The well is super interesting, the dome was great, the Etruscan museum and walking around the bottom of the town.

The hostess where i stayed is wonderful.
The hostess where i stayed is wonderful. She gave me restaurant tips. I went to two restaurants and cafes too. They were all good.
Orvieto is wonderful to walk around with beautiful scenery, interesting history and great shops. Top quality beautiful goods. Leather and ceramics and clothing all top quality. A magical experience awaits at one shop with armour outside.
The whole town is a photographers dream and the views of the surrounding countryside are amazing. Especially from the clock tower. Beautiful walks along well kept paths overlooking the countryside.
The Duomo is stunning and there are many galleries, museums and historic places to visit. Easy to walk around. A funicular ride up is special.
The underground tour is so interesting.

Orvieto is a beautiful city.
Orvieto is a beautiful city. It stands out by its friendly services all around. They just welcome visitors more than other cities. Also free wifi the entire city centre. In the winter months, it's magical. I love sitting in Piazza del Popolo during the summer months - it really transported me back into how I come to know of Italy in films. I will go back over and over again for retreats.

Lovely Umbrial hill town. A must see is the Duomo.
Lovely Umbrial hill town. A must see is the Duomo. The highlight is the San Brizio chapel with detailed frescos of the day of judgement and life after death. Also the outside facades divided by four pillars. Beautiful mosaics, sculpture and stained glass start with the creation and end with the last judgement. Highly impressed with this Cathedral.

We've known the city for many years - a little bit off the beaten track, not much "mass tourism" but well worth a visit for its history, remarkable cathedral, and its excellent restaurants
The apartment contains a full kitchen with all the appliances we needed. Daniela stocks the kitchen with jams, tea, coffee, toast, eggs, milk, juice, etc. The rooms are furnished with wonderfully family made furniture and are very comfortable. The entry door is surrounded by star jasmine and is off a quiet laneway, yet the apartment is only 2 minutes walk to the retail and restaurant area and 5-6 minutes walk to the duomo. Great apartment, and we’d book it again if returning to Orvieto or the Umbrian surrounds
this is a wonderful property, perfect location and a great price. People who run it are so nice and the breakfast is downstairs in their little trattoria/bar. Its right near the Duomo and of course many restaurants and shops everywhere. we wish we had stayed longer in Orvieto, the room we stayed in was just fine, it did have ac. The Magnolia took our license plate down so hopefully driving into centro zone fines won’t be an issue. All in all this is a wonderful convenient location right in Centro.
Very friendly and helpful staff. We had our own car, and driving in old, hilltop towns can be disastrous in Italy! But we were given explicit driving instructions which were accurate and easy to understand, to our secure underground parking area. The apartment was cute, and functional and could easily have accommodated 4 people. The bathroom was fine for Italy and the kitchen was lovely. The location is basically unbeatable, right on the main street and felt completely safe.
Everything, food is one of the best I tried in italy it was very warm and fresh! The people are warm and welcoming as if you are visiting a family you know a long time ago and the place is facilitated for family friendly setting with games for kids and TV and a cosy fireplace, it is veryyyy warm inside the house so never worry of the cold, the view from our room was spectacular and would definitely visit again for this quiet amazing scenery 💜💜💜 absolutely a must visit!
The apartment is spacious and has wonderful amenities like washer, comfortable beds, super clean and modern bathrooms, a separate second level for bedrooms, and a nice eating area and television viewing area. The hostesses were kind and met us at the door when we arrived. They gave us an amazing recommendation for dinner. orvieto is gorgeous and one of my favorite cities in Italy. I will come back and plan on staying here every time I visit. Thank you!!!
Beautiful, quaint little boutique hotel. It’s right in the heart of Orvieto. There is a hotel bar that serves espresso, liqueurs, and wine. A nice breakfast every morning. The staff was very helpful and polite. They were a great help booking dinner reservations and a taxi (one of only three in the city). It was just the right hotel for the quaint experience of a small hill town in Umbria.
Driving up to the property was truly serene. Such picturesque landscape— what I think of when I think of Italy. The host was so welcoming and shared the history of the farm on our arrival. She was so welcoming and kind. We sat ans had wine from the neighboring farm as we looked out on the la escape for hours. We could have spent more time here for sure!
I had a great stay at Casa Vera. I had the Primula suite. A small kitchen, bedroom and cosy terrace. The space was clean and very comfortable. The property is very well located, only a few minutes walk from the Duomo. I would definitely stay here again, and will recommend Casa Vera Affittacamere to anyone coming to Orvieto.
That apartment is the best apartment rented in Italy by our family. It is spacious, light, very stylish and there is everything you can think about including sugar, water, cookies, oil in the kitchen. The garden is marvellous, the host is really attentive and gave us all the maps and directions we wanted.
Very helpful staff, clean room with all the usual hotel facilities. Orvieto is a lovely hill top town and the hotel is well positioned to see the sights. It's not far from the funicular railway to the new town. Vehicular access to the hotel with on street parking right next to the hotel.
Clean and Comfortable apartment with 2 big bedrooms and windows. Excellent location, few minutes walk to many shops, restaurants and The Duomo. The owner is friendly and very helpful to answer all the questions. In our next visit to Orvieto, we will stay at Urbevetus again.
The hostest was fantastic. She provided a bagged breakfast due to our early departure and arranged for a taxi to pick us up in the morning.
This a family business where you can see that they take great pride in their property.
One of our best stays in 4 weeks in Italy!
Everything! It was like staying in a 5-star hotel, plus a complete kitchen. The hostess made us feel completely welcome, and the central location couldn't have been better, yet it was calm and quiet, only a few meters from the main streets, museums, Duomo and shopping.
I am in Italy get me a price of 100 a nite not 130
The pool made it everything else is boreing and maybe that is what you want
quiet and secluded but best if you have a car and they serve only breakfast you must get your own food
Hotel Duomo is the place I always stay in, when in Orvieto. Very clean, nice room and I believe it is run by a family. Price is very reasonable and they have parking.
I highly recommend this place if you are staying in Orvieto
The house was nice and had everything needed for a good stay. The location, once you get settled is good, within the historic town center. 5 minutes from the main attraction, the magnificent Duomo di Orvieto!
This hotel is very special. It is run by a lovely family who take pride in what they provide, which is a warm welcome, always helpful and a comfortable place to explore Orvieto.
