The Japanese rooms were large, the staff was friendly and the food was great. We did the included dinner and breakfast and the portions were large, especially the dinner. You definitely won't be hungry. The breakfast is traditional Japanese fare which was good, but may not be suitable for some oversee travelers. They also had a lot of books for kids and magazines to peruse in their lobby and library section. Overall, the value quotient is fantastic.

The location was gorgeous, both the ryokan and the surrounding areas. There's a luxurious main lounge with small shops and restaurants that almost seem like you're wandering through a tiny town. There are multiple public onsen with views of the river that seemed close enough to touch. The room itself was quite spacious with a nice river view, a kotatsu, complementary tea and an electric kettle, a private toilet and shower, and more. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were both delicious. Also, the proprietress did an entertaining picture show performance of The Mermaid and the Red Candles.

Nakanojo is an amazing area in Shima, giving access to several wonderul onsen and hiking opportunities. A quiet spot that is perfect to relax and enjoy the spa baths. There is a small connivence store for basic goods and several small cafe to grab coffee or other light meals. It is easily walkable for those who like to hike in scenic mountain towns.

While we did not have time to explore Nakanojo itself, we took a train its small, clean train station where helpful staff who spoke no English pointed us to the bus that would take us to one of the many onsen that are in the beautiful mountains above Nakanojo. It was just a 40-minute leisurely ride winding up a narrow road with a river on one side that was called the Onsen Trail, I imagine because of the number of onsen that line the route. Nakanojo itself appeared to be a pleasant country town and I'm sorry we didn't have the time to explore what it had to offer. The onsen and river provided a wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities we'd been visiting. Highly recommend staying at Toshimaya-onsen which overlooks the river and has private in-room mineral baths for those who are not up to using the public baths!
