The museums, the ancient churches with art, and the archeological digs were awesome. This was enhanced by the convenience of public buses and trolleys. The food was a bit expensive in restaurants but high quality. We liked Ozo Greek restaurant located on the pedestrian street for baked lamb. We just went shopping in air-conditioned malls (ask helpful friendly staff for recommendations) and enjoyed hotel facilities. Bulgaria is like a second home to me since my first visit. I always fly into Sofia to start and end my trip there. Great people, great venues, hotels in the center all make it easy to enjoy. I love going to Vitosha Boulevard for the view and to eat. I also love going to LARGO di Serdika Bar & Diner as it just has a very cool vibe. Everything is within walking distance to each other. The free walking tour guide was excellent so I'd recommend taking that. The city is lovely in the centre but very run down as soon as you wander a street or two outside.
