This was the perfect place to stay on our first night in Costa Rica. We were looking for a place with transportation from the airport, and Mathieu was very easy to coordinate with for this. The room was spacious and nicely appointed, we loved sleeping with the fresh air and waking up to the sounds of the birds and insects. We also loved relaxing on the private porch in the morning, and even saw a toucan fly by just as we were sitting down to eat! Breakfast was great as well, we are a family of 4 and everyone was happy. Would love to stay here again!

This is very close to SJO Airport. Great for before or after flights for that reason (I stayed after and before flights). Alajuela street layout is easy to navigate. Tons of restaurants and shops in the vicinity.

I think most travelers would not spend more than two nights in Alajuela- 1 inbound and 1 outbound.
I spent 5+2 nights in Alajuela while I was getting ready for my family members' visits spread over a few days.
Our "suburban" enclave was up-to-date with modern facilities, and close to Alajuela near the Freeway 1.
The location where we stayed was "authentic" with a tiny super, a cute bakery, a soda, and the most delightful neighbors.
I could almost stay to learn the language. :0

I stayed pretty close to a large shopping mall--just a few blocks away--so the restaurant options were great. I ate at "Mahalo"--great poke! The house is within a few miles of the airport, so getting there only cost 3 colones, and I took a Tuasa bus (for about two dollars) to get to Alajuela from downtown San Jose. The only "negative" is that there were traffic sounds, but they settled down when it got later. I would definitely stay in Alajuela again. I felt completely safe walking back alone at night after dinner.

The area is fun and easy to get around. There are many small stores, but no good supermarkets. TONS of cafes and fast food places, so getting something to eat is easy. I'd go there again, but there's not a ton to do unless you enjoy sitting in parks, which I do.

It’s the best location to stay on your first night,...
It’s the best location to stay on your first night, especially if you arrive in the evening and don’t have an “all inclusive“ vacation booked; and best location for your last night in Costa Rica, due to the proximity to the airport.
Be warned, the red taxis are really expensive and Uber drivers are allowed to drop you off at the airport, but are not allowed to pick you up from the airport. Most places that offer accommodation, also offer a pickup service from the airport. Take it. The closer to the airport, the cheaper they get; prices start at $5 and could get to $35, $40 US dollars , depending on the distance to the airport.
Most rental cars offices are around the airport, so, look for a place to stay not too far away from the airport and one that offers drop off to a rental car office. If not, it’s always an Uber driver available. The closer to the airport, the better, for first and last night stay, because driving in the city could take a veeeeeery long time.
If you have time, walk the streets of Alajuela, people are very friendly and ready to help. Be very careful, the water tranches along the pedestrian walkways, are very deep, and the holes on the uneven pavement are deep as well, but definitely go to the city’s fresh market; it is a very interesting experience. Make sure you calculate well the prices, from corones into dollars, lots of vendors will try to take advantage of you, if you don’t pay attention. You can pay in US dollars everywhere, except for buses (long distance or local buses); the dollar bills must be pristine, one little tear anywhere on the bill, will be refused.
All in all is a nice city full of hustle and bustle, with lots of cars and people, with little parks with amazing trees, lots of perrots, delicious fresh fruits and gelatos
Don Carlos Place was the best reservation I have ever had on Booking. The hosts (Carmen & Felix) were communicative and they met us in person at the property to greet us, give the keys, give a tour, and explain the rules. They were wonderful, flexible, and easy to communicate with.
Easy check-in. Safe, quite location. Very close to central Alajuela and a 10 minute drive to the airport. The place was spacious, clean, and comfortable. It was extremely well stocked with spices in the kitchen, snacks, and thoughtful amenities.
My partner and I stayed here before our early flight from the SJO airport, and it was very convenient for this purpose, as well as cheaper than most hotels around. It's a shared house where you get your own bedroom but share bathrooms and a really nice looking kitchen. You can't walk to the airport, it's not that close, but Ubers were easy to get at around 6am and took about 10 min. We had late check in and early check out, and cleared this with the host beforehand, who were nothing but helpful.
Our flight landed just after midnight. The accommodation gave us excellent directions. They told us to take an Orange official taxi , the cost and distance to the hotel. It cost 7$. Would be cheaper if paid in CRC. The taxi driver waited until the hotel door was unlocked and we were able to go in. Quiet hotel. Comfortable bed. Good cooking facilities. Nice seating area.
Banks in town. Claro shop to buy a sim.
Breakfast in cafe opposite good.
Perfect structure next to the airport to start and/or conclude the trip in Costarica. The Alajuela quarter where the hotel is located is nice, typical. Good to visit if you have some part of the initial/final day in Costarica.
Owners are kind and very well organized (also with social media) and can help you, about the transport from/to the airport.
Very good
Near airport, good shuttle service. A budget hotel, very clean but hot water in the bedroom only in the shower, not the sink. Staff friendly. Breakfast basic, eggs were overcooked. Near a mall which has all sorts of food shops. As the price indicates, this is a budget hotel. For a nights' stay it works. Any longer, I wouldn't recommend it.
Firstly, wonderful to stay in such an Oasis near airport. Hummingbirds
during breakfast and special owls all around. The family were so
friendly, staff excellent and rooms spotless, what more.can a.
traveller want. Yes, I would recommend to everyone, 10 out of 10 !
Mts. Pinfold p.s.also quick trip from airport not like going into SanJose.
Perfect hotel for arriving or leaving from San Jose airport, as actually the airport is located in Alajuela and not in San Jose. A taxi to/from the airport is only 6USD. But they even have a free shuttle from or to the airport, you can choose one of these options. Great staff and very good buffet breakfast.
Hotel Aeropuerto is new the San Jose, Costa Rica airport (SJO). The staff is very helpful and friendly. They helped carry my luggage to my room and are always cheerful. The layout of the hotel is nice and the grounds and lobby are very nice. Beds are nice and comfortable. AC was handy.
Really nice hotel in the middle of Alajuela. It is in an incredible old and beautiful house. Great garden at the back for breakfast. 5 minutes walk to the bus Station (to the airport or San José) and all shops are around the corner. Great staff!
Pibi Boreal is a dreamy authentic Tico hotel in a beautiful mountain location. Mateo and Nidia were the best hosts. Breakfast was delicioso! We loved being able to accommodate our entire group of 5 families in one place. We will be coming back!
Near airport, very convenient to catch an early flight. There is no problem catching the free shuttle bus to the airport. It leaves very frequent and it is a mid size bus so everyone who wanted to get on will. Very clean.
If you're looking for a cheap place to stay close to the airport for one night this is a good option. Rooms were clean and breakfast was included. We were lucky to get the only parking spot right in front of the hotel.
Wow! Loved the stay in the tent. It was very comfortable and the temperature was about 20C outside so we didn’t need to use the fan. The hostess was very lovely and welcoming. Good near airport stay.
We stayed here twice, loved it both times. Easiest and best option for before and after flights. Free airport shuttle and car rentals are just next to hotel. Gym is great. Rooms are clean and modern.
Alajuela City Hotel and Guest House is comfortable, safe, and charming. Everyone we interacted with was helpful and warm and everything was very clean.
