This is a comfortable old home on the water with lovely views. Brendan, our host, was helpful and available. He made us dinner reservations for the night of our arrival. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The shower worked very well with on demand hot water. We had two different breakfasts, both delicious. There’s a nice walking path out the front door along the water’s edge and less than a mile to town center. I highly recommend staying at Briar Brae.

Balyett is wonderfully located just outside Stranraer, off the road to Cairnryan. The room was extremely comfortable and I loved the bed; it was very soft (which I like) but may not be to everyone's taste. The bathroom was small but was modern and clean.
Lovely breakfast on one long table.

The food downstairs was perfect for us and 2 young kids. Staff very helpful and kind when I asked about the egg fried rice and curry sauce! Was delicious! Would definitely stay again before our ferry. Left a daughter’s mobile and they contacted us promptly before we even realised. Perfect location for early morning ferry. Shower was amazing!!! Staff so friendly.

Room was very comfortable and well appointed; TV needed a wee bit of attention but then worked perfectly (previous guest had been fiddling with it!); breakfast was one of the best cooked breakfasts I have enjoyed when staying away from home - freshly cooked to order and very tasty! A big 10/10 - eggselent!
Stranraer is a ferry port with good bus links to Dumfries.
Stranraer is a ferry port with good bus links to Dumfries. The tow, itself had a "sedate ' feel to it. Traffic was slow and polite. Lots of fish and chips shops. The central castle / tower house is the only place of interest and museum. Famous centre for curling with rink open in winter months.

Absolutely highly recommend this beautiful stylish hotel, very clean, great food with a warm welcome
Excellent location on the sea front and lots of parking spaces. Beautiful reception area and staff were very welcoming and helpful. Room was very spacious with a small table and two chairs, large comfy bed and good facilities. Evening meal was lovely, very tasty and well presented with good choices; as was breakfast the next morning, absolutely perfect. The dining room is beautiful and set out nicely. The bars were both superb to have a drink and relax. Absolutely highly recommend this charming hotel, simply one of the best we have stayed in! We will definitely return!

Stranraer is wet and windy and very rundown.
Stranraer is wet and windy and very rundown. There is not a restaurant open past 9 o’clock. Very few takeaways and a Tesco’s and a Morrisons. There is nothing to do past 1730. Once the shops are closed our hotel we arrived at 2045 And the restaurant had already closed, there was no room service we had to go out in the pouring rain and wind to get a takeaway as they would not allow takeaway delivered to the hotel or to be eaten in hotel bar area which only one was open. We had to eat it in a room and it was cold by the time you got back so complete waste of money. This hotel is rundown and has been the same for the last 20 years. Last time we visited it. Stranraer was bustling, then as the port was in town. But no, there is only cairn Ryan you can leave from and it is 6 miles out of the village. All it’s good for is getting the ferry to Belfast.

Firstly, ships no longer berth in Stranraer as your photo depicts.Nothing wrong with Stranraer or the people who are very friendly, but industry and employment is desperately needed together with an improvement of the road network, in particular the 100 mile long A75. All thanks to the Scottish government who are spending the money on the capital City.

We were quite sad at how downtrodden Stranraer looked since we were there in 2019. It seems very little shops survived the pandemic and there is now very little to do. The buildings could do with a clean or a repaint. This once bustling town is a bit sorry for itself.

Stranraer itself has become very shabby and rundown.
Stranraer itself has become very shabby and rundown. However there are wonderful attractions all around it. Logan Botanic Garden was brilliant with a decent cafe. Portpatrick is a beautiful small village with lots of cliff walks while Sandhead has a fabulous beach. Castle Kennedy Gardens and Glenwhan Gardens are also nearby while Wigtown Book Town isn't too far away.
Looks like a place that is well looked after. Was very comfortable and felt fresh. There was a place to leave the bike in front of the door but also a separate parking place is just nearby. The communication with a host was through the whatsapp which was handy. I was warmly welcomed and the breakfast was very well done (there was a menu the day before) with some artsy touches I could see, the dining room looked spotless and well arranged.
I think there was some walking trail nearby as well.
The location is perfect, quiet with stunning views. Ideal for either popping into Stranraer for something to eat/drink, or local shops, also ideally located if your planning to catch the ferry to Ireland, and what a stop over first.
The rooms are well laid out, with plenty of thought given to presentation, also having plenty of storage space, and the breakfast is fantastic with plenty of choices depending on what you want
Room was beautifully clean and fresh - even from the hallway it smelt fresh! Really easy check-in process, staff were super friendly towards our dog, and lovely well-lit park & seaside promenade walk across the road for a stroll after a long drive. Great location only 10-15mins drive from Cairnryan ferry ports, but surprisingly not too much freight truck noise overnight (as we've experienced near other ports).
We liked everything. The accommodation was immaculate. The attention to detail and the thought that had gone into providing what guests would enjoy to have in their room (including biscuits & water every day, wine glasses & bottle opener, a fridge and bathrobes etc), was terrific. We have stayed in many hotels that have not come up anywhere near to the standards of Thornbank House.
Luxurious rooms and a hearty home-cooked breakfast. Beautiful décor and comfy beds. Decanter of whiskey in you room! Views overlooking the bay and the park. Stranraer is a lovely town, with high street, good restaurants, free museum, and free castle to explore. Parking is free and abundant.
Room reasonable size but wish could have been nearer ground - with small dog. However, we managed and there was a lift - a plus! At least the hotel accommodates well-behaved pets and a lot of others would benefit from doing so.
Dinner was quite nice, if pricey.
Breakfast fine
The location was brilliant for easy access to ferry port. The owner was very friendly and helpful with regards to suggesting a nearby pub that served an excellent meal and at a reasonable price. Hopefully we will use this b& b again when we travel to Ireland. Lovely breakfast.
Lovely clean apartment with great views over the harbour. Free parking close by is a plus too. Everything is provided for the stay including a nice big smart tv, we’d surely come back here if returning to this part of Scotland
This was a wonderful place to stay very pleasant and would highly recommend it, myself and my friend stayed for one night only as was checking on my caravan near by. Definitely would return to this property.
Great location for the ferry, excellent breakfast, host Jacqui was very friendly and accommodating. Room and dining room very clean and all covid protocols adhered to.
Hope to visit again in near future.
Wilma was really welcoming and helped with parking right by the door. My room was at the back of the building, quiet and private. The hotel location was easy to find and close to main routes for ferry.
The lovely welcome from Sandy. He made us very welcome. We went to the cenotaph to pay our respects and the pipes and drums where lovely. Stranraer is a lovely place.
Lovely location, beautiful views of surrounding countryside and lovely walk to the nearest beach and along the clifftop to Portpatrick. Nice area for cycling also.
Hotel had a Curling rink, we arrived on a competition weekend and was able to sit in the bar and watch.......great!
On the whole the staff were friendly.
