Unfortunately, Montrose is struggling because of the downturn in the oil industry. It has a number of empty shops and the main street area is a bit scruffy. This is in marked contrast to the residential areas, which are all smart, clean and tidy. There are also park areas giving a lot of greenery within the town. The surrounding area is interesting. Arbroath and Stonehaven were worth a visit and Dunnottar Castle is a must. The Air Museum in Montrose is also a couple of hours well, spent.Guest review byPhilipUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The Auld Kirk, now Trinity of Montrose, is an exceptional place of worship. It includes two (2) balconies for large crowds. The minister who preached on July 6, 2025 did an wonderful job The RAF museum and the Montrose Museum are both worthy of a visit. On our way down from Aberdeen, we stopped at St Cyrus just north of Montrose. It is a beautiful spot with a nature reserve with trails through the dunes to the beach and a more inland trail passed an old Kirk yard. Montrose downtown felt a little tired, a little gritty. But it has a lot going for it. We went and saw a movie at the Montrose Playhouse. We walked the beach at Montrose and had a lovely meal at the Pavillion cafe there.Guest review byJoyCanada - 10.0

Montrose is a beautiful place to visit, so much to see locally and further afield. Close to the train station. Supermarkets and petrol stations as well as a lovely high street with local independent shops. Golf course and a beautiful beach. I visited Lunan Bay, St Cyrus beaches, unspoilt, not commercial (take food/water), areas of natural beauty with so much wildlife. Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven a short journey via coastal route is worth a visit, lots of well maintained steps bit fantastic views and history. Visited some small lochs near Forfar, again not far away. Viewed Osprey and Red Squirrels. Went further north to go to Troup Head, near Banff to see the Gannet colony. Montrose Basin for wildlife and a visit to 'Bamse' statue/memorial, a WW2 story of a heroic dog and Norway connection. A great visit to Montrose Air Museum, outskirts of town. The Traill Pavillion, beach front does an amazing Scottish breakfast. Cafe, children's playpark, splash park also on the seafront, plenty of parking.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

I was returning briefly to the place I grew up.
I was returning briefly to the place I grew up. It has an interesting history having once been a port of importance for trade between Scotland and the Nordic countries. It was the place in the UK where the first mental hospital with it's raison d'être being as a place of cure rather than just incarderation was opened in 1782. There is a wonderfully long beach of soft sand to enjoy walking along and a few good pubs and eateries to keep you fed and watered.Guest review byBillyUnited Kingdom
