FAQs about hotels in Southampton

Historic Port of Walls

Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.

There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.

Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.

There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.

If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

I really had to wonder why under ‘things to do’ in Tripadvisor it advised Bournemouth and Winchester? After an afternoon in the centre it was all clear. Pavements were filthy, fighting in street and although very sad so many drug addicts and homeless.

Our staylocation was near Oxford Street, many restaurants.

Our staylocation was near Oxford Street, many restaurants. We tried Miss Pita (Greek - good), OXOX for breakfast (good) and curry restaurant (good). City is walkable even with a mobility problem. Wonderful closed off street with shopping and restaurants, also historic sites. Visited the Titanic museum, ticket included a walk through of a Jane Austin exhibit. We will return to Southampton for a longer visit.

We found a website called Getyourtickets.com.uk. it is a local service and very good. We weren't able to get tickets on tbe other sites but I found this one. We explored the medieval values and the ancient wall. Fascinating. If we had more time we woukd have seen more. We bought some delicious donuts and brownies at the market stalls.

The breakfast was very good and a nice variety of foods.

The breakfast was very good and a nice variety of foods. We did not realize that the bedrooms in some European hotels were not air conditioned so we sweated through the night. The windows looked like they were well locked and being that there was a roof top outside we were not about to even try to open them up. No one told us that there was a small fan up on a shelf in the closet. They also do not have face cloths or hand towels in the rooms even when you ask for them so you have to use a large towels all the time. We had hoped to be able to walk to the cruise ship but it was too far and too much traffic. We did walk to TGIFridays for a great dinner. The hotel staff was very pleasant. They did only had one brochure in the lobby for the area. That was disappointing. They were accommodating locking up our luggage because we had arrived early off an international flight, however when they did have a room ready they asked if we wanted it we needed to pay $10 per hour until the 3 pm time. By that time it was close to 2 pm and we said no thanks.

I have visited Southampton over a dozen times and sixty years and absolutely love the city. As a matter of fact, as a couple we were part of the city's first Festival of the Written Word, because we were visiting an art gallery just before the poetry reading began and they wanted some Yankee voices. We love the history, architecture, culture, museums, art galleries, and restaurants... and chose, for first anniversary dinner, to eat at Ennios across from the Red Funnel dock This time we took Redjet to the Isle of Wight and had a fabulous adventure. I'd been to Hythe before and enjoyed it immensely. As writers, we highly recommend Waterstone bookstore in the mall and recommend Marks & Spencers for almost every need.
