Extremely beautiful village very clean, even in middle of July, it did not feel overcrowded, easy walk to all attractions, Villa Monastero gardens is a must. Enjoyed, 4hrs in Billagio for sightseeing and shopping although very crowded. Side trip via bus to the gorge in Bellano was a highlight. Varenna was extremely safe, beautiful and not too crowded the last week of July. Everything that you needed from groceries, fruit, baked goods, breakfast, lunch and dinner were all withing steps of each other. Varenna is a very attractive lakeshore village to spend a couple of days and has the advantage of excellent connections by ferry to other places on the lake, and by rail. Small enough to walk round and see in a day. Lovely just to sit by the lake or in the small central square and watch the world go by, although exploring the alleys is enjoyable too. It has a range of eating places, though accommodation is tighter for those wanting to stay over rather than making a day trip. It is charming and exactly the Italy that Iove. The only drawback is that the "streets" are extremely steep and of course cobblestoned. It is what makes it so perfect but also a bit hard to navigate at times but not if you are younger - lol.Guest review byCathyUnited States

The blend of traditional character and modern comfort was perfect. The house is very close to Lake Como, right beside a fast stream of water that flows right into the lake. It is conveniently located close to the Fiumelatte train station, and a short walk away from the historic centre of Varenna along a picturesque road. Very close to the town parking garage and the two garden villas as well. Bags can be left at reception until check-in time, and there's an elevator. But, Varenna's all stairs, even to the lake view rooms – three flights up with my bags, no elevator! It's a 10-15 minute walk from the station, too. The best lake view rooms are in a separate building, a couple blocks from the main one. Varenna's gorgeous, and the hotel's cute.
