A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

Visiting the archeological park is very nice, I recommend going early in the morning (8.30AM) before big tourist groups start arriving.
Ortigia is also a great place to go: besides sightseeing objects, I particularly recommend via Cavour with lovely small artisan shops.
A Putia near Fontana di Diana seemed to be a small diner appreciated both by locals and tourists. Good food, reasonable prices, ok service.

Ortigia is amazing, so much great food, and lovely to walk around. There isn't more than a day's worth of sight-seeing on the island, plus the Archaeological sites in Siracusa, but it is an excellent home base for day trips around south-east Sicily. And perfect for a relaxing holiday - coffee and a pastry in front of the duomo, a walk around the island and a little shopping (mostly touristy stuff unfortunately), and a gelato looking out over the water on the promenade. Very friendly people, lovely architecture and history around every corner, fantastic restaurants, and even in February, SUN!

Siracusa is a lovely city with a lot of history.
Siracusa is a lovely city with a lot of history. The old part of the city on Ortigia island is full of beautiful old buildings and archaeological sites.
There are many good restaurants and bars and by and large it is relatively cheap.
We rented a car; there are many worthwhile places to visit within an hours drive, including Etna. In the summer a car is essential if you want to get to the many beaches in Sicily

What a great city for a 4 day stay.
What a great city for a 4 day stay. We loved Ortigia, the Archamides outdoor interactive museum, etc. We also ventured off to Taormina and Isola Bella for the most beautiful views. Much prefer this city to Palermo which was dirty and congested.

Nestled along the shores of the Ionian Sea, Syracuse...
Nestled along the shores of the Ionian Sea, Syracuse effortlessly captures the essence of ancient and modern Sicily. The heart of the city, Ortigia Island, is a labyrinth of charming alleyways, historic architecture, and vibrant markets. Strolling through the narrow streets reveals hidden gems like the Piazza del Duomo, adorned with the breathtaking Syracuse Cathedral and the Fountain of Arethusa, surrounded by tales from Greek mythology.
Syracuse boasts a rich history that unfolds in its archaeological sites. The Greek Theater, a testament to its ancient past, provides a stunning backdrop of the sea. The Ear of Dionysius, a limestone cave with exceptional acoustics, offers a glimpse into the city’s fascinating tales.
Ortigia is my favorite city in Sicily and having stayed there many times already, Casa Aretusa was my favorite!! The apartment is huge and exceeded expectations for our group of 7.
I didn't realize when I booked that the apartment is literally steps from our favorite restaurant, Ristorante La Medusa, which was a treat to have such a short walk to and from dinner. Balcony views look straight into a magical side street.
Check in process was super easy, allowing us to get straight to enjoying ourselves.
Will definitely stay here again!!
Sabrina was a great host, and the apartment met all our needs. It is right in the historical area of Ortigia and there are amenities all around. It makes a good base to explore Sicily albeit parking can be expensive in a long stay (37.65 euros per 24-hour period using Easy Park app). The terrace is a nice place to unwind - weather permitting (we had rain several nights though everybody said how unusual that was).
we paid a little extra and booked room nr 2 with view of the piazza Archimedes and loved it.
the room was a comfortable size, lots of light and friendly decor. The location is the best, right in the center of Ortigia which is the prettiest part of Syracuse.
sights, restaurants, shops all right there.
The property is in a pedestrian area and parking is 10 min away. We travel light so it was no problem.
We had a room with a balcony overlooking the sea, beautiful!! Good breakfast, host parks your car, hosts made dinner and taxi reservations all of which we greatly appreciated. This facility was one of the highlights of our two week vacation in Sicily.
It is at the end of a short dead end street so we wondered if we had found it but saw the sign for the hotel and were very happy.
It's a gorgeous luxury hotel in the best location of Ortigia. This is the nicest hotel we stayed in during our 3 weeks in Sicily. Extremely clean and the staff was wonderful. When the airline lost our luggage, Silvia went above and beyond to ensure the airline would deliver our luggage to the hotel before we arrived. The staff was incredible. Highly recommend this hotel.
Very nice hotel. Beautiful patio. Rooftop terrace with view on the port and Ortigia. Friendly staff. Free public parking in front of the hotel. Close to Ortigia (accessible by foot). Some days even possible to cross the port to Ortigia by boat.
The best coffee we drank in Sicily was there! :-)
We wish to travel again to Siracusa and stay in that hotel.
Perfect location, in the center of Ortigia Island, right next to Duomo. The host was amazing and super helpful - he has booked a parking garage for us, and even took our car there and brought back before checkout (+ registered it for ZTL access). Room was big and spacious, very well insulated and quite. Breakfast was one of the best we had in Sicily.
Staff were very helpful and very pleasant to deal with. Staff were amazing!! Perhaps the most helpful and accommodating of all the hotels we stayed at in Sicily. The Breakfast was great! It was plentiful with many delicious options. Service was top notch. Served in a beautiful setting. We will stay here again when we return. Highly recommend!
an amazing resort with an incredible view to siracusa! super friendly staff and an amazing Service!! two beautiful private beaches, a Pool, spa and a Gym. I can only highly recommend Minareto to everyone who wants a beautiful and relaxed Holiday in Sicily - we definitely enjoyed our stay to the fullest - Thank you :-)
great style, everything you could need was provided. warm staff. it was like being at home, but in Ortigia! easy check in/great communication! loved the furnishings, plenty of space for our things. this was our favorite lodging in all of Sicily, including a posh hotel in Taormina!
the fully furnished space made for a very comfortable stay! as a traveller with chronic fatigue it was a relief having such a homey space to rest in when I needed to. and it is an incredible location on the beautiful island of Ortigia! and it's an easy walk to Syracuse as well.
Best location to discover Ortigia, right next to the piazza duomo. Simona is a great host and took the best care of us during our stay. The historic building is in a great condition and just recently modernized. Clearly a highlight of our Sicily trip. Absolute recommendation!!
The loveliest and most special accommodations we had in our three weeks in Sicily. Eva went above and beyond, with her time, enthusiasm and expertise, in making our stay in Scicli exceptional. The property is magnificent, and a highlight of our trip.
Everything. The best in Sicily to stay. Nice location to stay in Ortigia island. Gianluca was great and heloed us with everything we needed even we had a chance to leave our luggages ealrier and go for lunch.
The property was amazing! The view from the balcony was so beautiful. The host was very welcoming and helpful. We really had a great time and it was definitely one of the best places we stayed in Sicily.
We stayed 3 more days because we loved Syracuse and were very comfortable in the apartment.
Recommend to stay here in Ortigia rather than Syracuse city and this is one of the most affordable options.
Location of this B&B and the parking lot (20€ per night) are prefect on a road trip through Sicily. Comfy beds, spacious bathroom and very clean. Breakfast on the terrace was marvelous and plentiful.
The property was close to the historic town of Siracusa and the nearby island of Ortigia. It was a good base to visit most of the sights along the eastern coast of Sicily.
We loved everything about our stay here - comfy room, lovely house in general, welcoming hosts and the location is really good for exploring this area of Sicily
One more time in my favorite island -Sicily and exceptional Ortigia.Everything was O.K. in Casseta Lusilla.Design ,cleanless, comfortable, area of the apt.
