We had a wonderful time at Matera.
We had a wonderful time at Matera. The people were very friendly even though the season was just about to start and alot of facilities were still closed. We had a great first of the season meal at Enoteca dai Tosi with a tour of the facility. Tasted new wine, delicious meats from the local butcher, local cheeses, and some dishes from the new menu. The town is so beautiful, that you can't take a bad picture. You must prepare for a lot of stairs and walking...have comfortable shoes...
The town was even prettier at night. It was great! We wanted to stay longer and keep exploring....

A unique city with a long and interesting history.
A unique city with a long and interesting history. Parts of the old city are still being renovated. The ancient cave structures that have been transformed into modern hotels, restaurants, shops and bars are worth seeing. Tourists are not allowed to bring cars into the old city and parking outside can be tricky. Also, there are a lot of steps and uneven pavement so comfortable shoes are a must. Not very accessible for those who have mobility issues.

We loved our Ape Tour of the city.
We loved our Ape Tour of the city. As seniors, we were not able to walk the hills and steps so the tour was a great overview of the history. Beautiful, historic city! Glad we got here.. then had to go to our next hotel and watch the James Bond movie that was filmed there!

Matera is the only place in the world where people can boast...
Matera is the only place in the world where people can boast to be still living in the same houses of their ancestors of 9,000 years ago! Matera is the oldest continuously lived-in-settlements... in the World! Our yellow-washed stone house had a balcony to enjoy our cappuccino & roof-top terrace to gaze at the stars. It alone was another jewel of an experience. The town makes you feel as though you are a witness to Biblical times. You've seen it featured in Mel Gibson's "Passion of Christ" & Bond 007's "No Time to Die".
Excellent location with a wonderful view from the room and hotel terrace. It is very close to the main attractions but at the same time very quiet. Amazing well-designed room with modern facilities and traditional hand made furniture, comfortable bed and very high ceiling. It is a family business and the host was extremely kind, polite, helfpul and with perfect English at all times.
We traveled a lot across Italy but this was really the best value for the money. Thank you for everything, we are comming back soon for sure. Fabolous!
We liked everything about the hotel as it was basically brand new and very modern and clean and all the amenities you could want. the breakfast was great, there's an outside eating area and there's a small bar next to the lobby area. the staff was excellent, the rooms were spacious, we had a room with an outside balcony, and we were one minute from the ancient Matera city. the beds and pillows were fantastic, the bathroom was spacious and new and there's not really one thing I could say that we did not like about the hotel
We loved everything about our stay, the lovely warm welcome from Paolo with so much helpful information and the super-modern stylish room so well designed and kitted out with simple but high quality fittings and furnishings. It’s also a brilliant location, you can park easily on the road and in just a few minutes’ walk the iconic sight of Matera’s Sassi opens up before you inviting you to explore. I was originally keen to stay in one of the cave hotels in the Sassi but I’m so glad we chose Hydria Rooms, simply the best!
The room was as pictured and exceptionally clean! The beds were comfy with down pillows and comforters. The bathroom was nice with a very hot shower. The room even had a tiny fridge for drinks and an espresso machine. Outlets next to the beds were very convenient! The location of the hotel was about a 5 minute walk to the city center and a 10 minute walk to Sassi, Matera. There was a parking garage around the corner about a 2 min walk away which was also extremely convenient. Very pleased all around with this room!
One of our best times in Italy. The room was very clean, it had everything we needed and the owner was very kind and helpful. He gave us valuable information about what to see, where to eat and practical information about shopping. There is a small supermarket around the corner, a bakery with delicious bread and sweets, a salumeria, all in the same block. The room was close to the bus stop for Bari and just 10 minutes walk from the center of Matera. Great value for money and a wonderful host.
The views of Matera were as spectacular as shown. We stayed in a cave room with the entrance just to the side of the main patio. The rooms were fitted with the most modern amenities including ample lighting, outlets for charging devices and good HVAC system. Bathroom had a large contemporary shower panel and other fixtures. Location was also perfect as the hotel is in a quiet area but because the old city is compact it is only a 10 minute walk to the Duomo.
Small and beautiful hotel, located in the heart of the old town. The rooms are spacious and well equipped and you have a luxurious take on the 'cave dwelling experience'! A welcome glass of wine was served on arrival and the staff were very helfpul and friendly. A good breakfast was provided and the dining area itself has an amazing ambience. It can be expensive to stay in rooms like this in Matera, but it's absolutely worth it for the experience!
Five star ⭐️ luxury! What a room! Even though we always go for the smallest room to save money, this room was anything but small. It felt luxurious and elegant and was a real experience. The cave spa was an experience not to be missed. This was one of three cave hotels we stayed in during our four nights in Matera, and the night here was as magical as the other two, but this one with opulence!
The perfect location and road too if you ask us ;).
It was a real adventure sleeping in a cave room! The staff were very friendly and helpful before we arrived in providing transportation options for getting to the hotel. We chose the Damasco parking garage, which provides a shuttle to the hotel and pickup on departure, and were glad we had. The breakfast was excellent, and we enjoyed eating outside in the courtyard. The hotel is situated in an ideal location for exploring Matera.
this property was beyond exceptional. It had the absolute best for you in Matera, whilst also staying in a cave. it is a family run hotel, and they are all very friendly and helpful, they booked our tour of the city as well as dinner at a local restaurant both at the last minute. The location in Caveoso is unbeatable and breakfast was also well above expectations for a hotel. Couldn’t recommend this hotel enough.
All was outstanding. The owners and their very friendly Welcome, the hotel small bulding, the exceptional room (with cave's experience but sitll withblight and windows), the products in the bathrooms, the breakfast (different everyday) served in a lovely terrasse. The locaiton is perfect in the middle of Sassi, the old Matera's town. The owner also have a deliciously restaurant nearbye. A place no to miss in Matera!
We loved this hotel. It e as centrally located and a perfect base for exploring the fascinating town of Matera. Our room was in one of the cave dwellings and offered a totally unique stay with all the modern facilities of a super clean room, fantastic shower and very comfortable bed. The buffet style breakfast had a great variety of quality local produce and all members of staff were delightful.
This was one of the most gorgeous, thoughtful and unique hotel I've ever stayed in. AMAZING details. Wonderful lighting. Spare but still cozy. Well designed. Staff was helpful and interested. Breakfast was delicious and in another great space. We should have stayed two days - it's that good. And Matera is unlike anything I've ever seen. Don't miss this!!!
We absolutely loved our stay here, incredible cave apartment, styled beautifully in the heart of Matera. The bathroom was amazing and the bed so comfortable. Such a unique and memorable place to stay… cannot wait to return back here hopefully one day , and will be recommending to any friends that plan to visit Italy
Sant’Angelo is indeed a luxury retreat in the heart of the Sassi District of Matera. 5 Star views from the restaurant as the terrace faces the Church is St Mary of Idris. Lovely breakfast offered w/ plentiful options and great service. My cave room was tastefully restored and a treat to stay in.
Stylish and modern boutique hotel room, small balcony with a view, beautiful bathroom with a large shower, rooftop terrace with a view, good breakfast, good location to walk around Matera, great service in the reception
Gorgeous cave hotel with modern comforts, surrounded by the history of Matera. Tricky to find initially (as all things in Matera can be) but worth it. Great breakfast spread. Also we loved Charlie the hotel doggo!
The croissant and coffe for breakfast is at a cafe next to the hotel and was good.
Really friendly staff. They explain what should we visit in Matera and give us a map.
