We had a lovely stay in Refugio des Artes. Julio was an amazing host, made us feel very welcome from arrival and was very helpful in planning the exploration of local sights. Place is located in a quiet village but a lot of very interesting sights are easily reached by car. Place was very clean and had a lovely artistic vibe. Highly recommend if you want to stay a bit further away from the biggest tourist crowds.

We spent here full week with hiking, visiting caves and a salina in Rio Maior. Many different hiking trails with surprising diversity of landscape.
Good food in the local restaurants, we recommend Petisqueira Dom Lambuças in Alcaria - a typical, tasty Portuguese food at reasonable cost (we ate there twice and paid for the lunch with desert for 2 person 17€ and 24€ - the second included wine).
The best way to explore area is by car to your starting point, than on foot or by bike. Many marked trails, but I recommend a GPS working offline (trails are available in the internet in KLM and GPX format)

Fascinating area, full of history, traditional customs, intriguing water capture and management methods, great scenery. We took a guided trip of the Parque Natural da Serra e Candeeiros with a chap called Hernâni Edgar Magalhães in a nice, big Volvo 4WD. He spoke excellent English, was full of great information, showed us small villages, lagoas, an old windmill, dinosaur footprints, and even fed us gorgeous pastries made by his wife! We also like the city of Porto de Mós, which is very attractive and has a nice cafe beside the river and the tourism post plus a good castle, though it has been buggered about with and lacks its original charm; lacked good interpretive text about its architectural features . Wonderful sculptures in the park and suspended above the river. Friendly locals, lots to see and do. Will deffo return again to seek out Roman remains and more dino footprints. The park is large and full of geological and cultural goodies. DON"T MISS the awesome Mira de Aire caves with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Lots of other "grutas" also, if you like underground adventures.
