FAQs about hotels in Athens

Dynamic City With 3400 Years of History

With the Acropolis as the jewel in the archaeological crown of Athens, this city is full of history while embracing the future. Take a stroll back in time through the neoclassical streets of the Plaka, where you'll find tavernas serving tantalizing souvlaki and mousaka, street vendors and live entertainment.

A trip to the Parthenon and the Agora top most lists and can also be appreciated from a distance by walking along the Dionysiou Aeropagitou street, which is away from the busy crowds of the city center.

The changing of the guard occurs every hour on the famous Syntagma Square. From here, Ermou Street provides shopaholics with a fashionable retail sanctuary. The upscale districts Kolonaki and Kifisia are also bursting with fancy boutiques, galleries and bars.

Athens has some of the finest museums in the world, such as the National Archaeological, Acropolis and Benaki Museums. From Athens International Airport to the Port of Piraeus, this is a city bustling with the old and new. On Booking.com you can find everything from modern hotels to a room in a classical building.

We did the Acropolis in the heat and crazy wind and big crowds. Kind of a must to see it once, but we enjoyed walking the national gardens and seeing the Panathenaic Stadium in the cool of the evening, going to a museum in the heat of the afternoon, and visiting Piraeus for an afternoon. Ruins are everywhere - outside the metro, inside the metro station, walking along the street. But we were glad to get to an island and relax away from the crowds. It was easy to use both the metro and the busses, and we stopped at places in Piraeus, Monastirarki, and Plaka to eat. We tried many local dishes and enjoyed them all - souvlaki, gyro, fried cheese, meat and veggies in a sauce, pasta, risotto...

I would like to highlight that Athens is a historic place...

I would like to highlight that Athens is a historic place with an incredibly rich history and culture, the birthplace of great figures such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and Pericles. It is clear that a lot of resources and effort have been invested in the development of the city. However, unfortunately, much of it is either non-functional or in decline. Graffiti is visible almost everywhere, creating a sense of gradual degradation of the urban environment. Nevertheless, this city and country as a whole have enormous potential. If proper attention is given to preserving and maintaining the cultural and historical heritage, Athens can once again reveal its full beauty and grandeur.

Athens is a large city, but unfortunately, its public transportation system is quite poor. Buses are often overcrowded and move slowly due to the heavy traffic caused by the high number of cars on the streets. For tourists, Athens should ideally serve only as an entry point to Greece, especially for those who value a smooth and enjoyable travel experience. In summer, the city becomes even more challenging to navigate and is best avoided. Lastly, if you find yourself at Athens Airport after 23:30, be aware that the metro is no longer running and only buses are available. Avoid taking taxis at this time — many drivers overcharge significantly. For example, the official fare from the airport to Syntagma Square is around €70, which is already steep. Unofficial charges can be even higher (€150 to €200), so it's best to plan ahead and explore alternative transport options.

Athens is a big city and people are just trying to get to...

Athens is a big city and people are just trying to get to their destination. It can be difficult to get help if you need it (e.g. hailing a taxi - they just drive past. Even if they stop they don't offer to call you one). Experience in airport was dreadful. Bag was lost and after 6 hours sitting in Arrivals, someone helped us fill in a report. Tried to call the airport for an update the next day - pressed 2 for English - kept talking in Greek. Had to phone United in States to figure out where our bag was. They advised it was at airport so we returned to airport. Information desk were less than helpful and tried to wave me off to 'find someone'. I had to insist they helped me find the right place. When I got to that desk, the woman argued with me for 20 mins saying they didn't have the bag. It was sitting behind her the whole time - we only got it back because I again refused to leave until she helped me find it. And after all that, didn't even apologise. History in Athens is amazing but don't go expecting to be able to access help if you need it.

Athens is a very busy place there are lots of people and lots of traffic. If you stay near the touristic areas it's full of people but at the same time you are walking distance to everything. It is very hot you need to have water on hand all the time. Athens is historic. The only reason to visit or stay in Athens is because of the history and the beauty of the old artifacts. The Acropolis is a must and the Acropolis museum is a must. I would suggest to visit the Acropolis the latest possible. We went on the last run before it closed. It is not as hot and very breezy and the sunset is breathtaking. Also you will experience the guards taking down the Greek Flag, they do this every night. They take it down so the enemy would not steal their flag. And every morning when the Acropolis opens they raise the flag again. It's A lot of history you will be amazed on how this was built and that it is still standing. Also is you have anyone with a walker or a wheelchair they have a lift( outside elevator)on the side of the mountain that goes all the way to the top of the Acropolis and they can also experience the beautiful wonder.

Lovely hotel in a fantastic position in the heart of the Plaka district. Less than 10min walk from Monastiraki Square and train station which links direct to Athens airport. Staff really friendly and helpful and a really nice breakfast provided. Has definitely one of the best rooftop bars in Athens for views of the acropolis and sunsets. Reasonable prices as well. (Opens 6pm) Non guests welcome. Loads of bars and restaurants nearby.
