Surrounded by lush forestry and the Austrian Alps, the picturesque and cosmopolitan city of Graz offers pretty Renaissance courtyards, diverse architecture, a charming and historic old town, along with winding Mur River which runs through the heart of the city.
Graz’s vast history and architecture is on show beyond the fortified Old Town which is lined with cobblestoned streets, red rooftops, medieval houses, and famous landmarks such as Graz Clock Tower, Kunsthaus Graz, Graz Opera House and the 15th-century Burg.
Beyond the mountains of Grazer Schlossberg stand the Chateau Eggenberg and Herz Jesu Kirche. Graz has several popular entertainment areas, in particular the popular square Hauptplatz which features several cafés, bars, restaurants and shops.
Due it its many universities, Graz has a large student population which brings with it an energetic nightlife and a vibrant art scene. It has several interesting museums like the Alte Galerie.
Booking.com has a large choice of accommodation in and around Graz. Thalerhof Airport and Graz Hauptbahnhof offer links to many major European cities such as Vienna, Ljubljana, Zagreb and Munich.
I’m familiar with a lot of Central Europe but I had never been to Graz before. It’s a wonderful small city to visit with a lot of character and charm. Most attractions can be reached on foot, and the city tram and bus system is also easy to use. We took a guided walking tour of the city and especially enjoyed the views of the river and exploring the Burg with its vast tunnel system. The food was excellent and an excursion to a local winery and tavern was just a short city bus ride away, to Schmied König.
Came for a conference and knew nothing about the city. It has a beautiful, large and walkable old town. Fabulous for wandering. So many places to eat, coffee shops, pastry shops, and of course the usual clothing stores. Some great museums which I didn't bother with because the weather and strolling was so nice. The walk up to the old fort and clock is great - excellent for training if you want a work out. Took me 10 minutes (but I'm not in great shape) There are multiple ways up. The tram for 3 euros is beautiful. The tunnel under the mountain is a nice short cut through old town to the city park, which has a lovely bar/cafe/restaurant that lights up beautifully at night. And I would highly recommend breakfast at K&O rooftop. Try the scrabbled egg with pumpkin oil. Other people had these multi level towers with food on it, pretty cool too but too much for one person. And the city seems to have a great chill and drinks culture - around 4 or 5 pm everyone was out having a drink of something or other. It felt sophisticated and friendly, not a lets get drunk type of vibe. Though I'm sure you can find that if you want....there is a nice open aire venue under the bridge to Hautzplatz...keep your ears open at night...they were playing heavy rock when I was there and it was great fun to pop down the stairs for a listen.
We got in the main sights in one afternoon and evening, though we missed out on the slide. Overall it was worth a stop if you are going to Vienna, Salzburg, and Hallstatt. Taking the tram from the train station made getting to the old city and castle easy enough.
Perfect blend of history and current world due to nice old buildings and modern art. „lively“ due to students; some construction work (but not that it matters too much), perfect public transport, easy to get into country side, los to see and do, polite people which is really refreshing. Prefer over Vienna and even Salzburg
Excellent visits in the main. the Graz tourist 24/48hour ticket good value. Public transport excellent. Eggenberg Palace top visit as was the armaments museum. I am an historian . Bhte other museums in Graz excellent art from the contemporary which was disappointing - I also collect contemporary art. Restaurants excellent and good range of prices and wines superb
The old town is the best part of Graz. There are restaurants and a lovely church in the old town, some quaint streets and the welcome frankfurter stand in the main square. Parking is difficult in the old town but you can find it when you cross the bridge on some main streets. Use Google map to walk in the right direction to find the old town which is still a good 5-10 minute walking distance from the bridge to the historical center. You will enjoy the main square in the old town and the little streets lined with shops there.
Breakfast is served in the am between 7 and 11. Although initially it appears a lot of 'food' is available the selection is somewhat minimal. It was also the first time for me to see rolls and breads served out of cooking pots. Austrian customs? Who knows but I found it strange that you have to lift to cooking lids to see what kind of rolls this pot holds. We also had to ask for fresh water which was not readily available. Coffee was offered but when we wanted an expresso we were promptly reminded it will be an extra cost.
Gries, Graz
Property has great location. Near main railway station. You can easily access from Airport and than if you want to travel across Austria. Tramway and Bus station is also close. Host is very helpful and friendly. Rooms are clean, bright and comfortable with all kitchen facilities. Vicinity is calm and have many dining options. Highly recommended.
Lend, Graz
Close to the train station. Comfortable, fully equipped, spacious, modern apartment on the 5th floor of the apartment block. Good value (for Austria) and great comms from host. Looks a bit sketchy outside but like many European apartments much better inside. Tram lines on the street could be noisy for some (not for us though).
The hotel is aprox. 10 min. from the city centre. Generally you have everything in the hotel room, what you need for 1 day stay. Our room was little bit small, but very smartly furnished. Bathroom and shower was big enough and the receptionist was very kind, speaks very good english and helpful.
Lend, Graz
Apartment was clean, spacious, comfortable and great location 20 mins walk to train station . Supermarket around the corner. 25 mins walk to Graz city center. Good stop over for those travelling for Austrian F1 Grand Prix. Host was very friendly. It was a home from home for 6 days.
Gries, Graz
My stay offers me a real opportunity to discover Austria. The fact of hearing people speaking the authentic German language does satisfy me immensely. After working for two months in Budapest for a Chinese company, I do feel very entitled to be able to stay a few days here.
I loved everything. The value for the price was awesome. It was super comfy, super clean and the staff was welcoming. I was so surprised you can get this for this price in Austria. I had a great sleep on my way to Croatia.
Gries, Graz
The location was great, 15 minutes walk from the centre, just across the bridge, and you're in the old town. Great restaurants nearby, turkish but also Austrian traditional restaurants.
Staff super nice and helpful also very close to the highway which is great if you are staying just one night. All stuff speaking good English…which is not that common in Austria.
The location is great, just a 15 minute walk into the city centre. The hotel rooms a comfortable with a nice bed and shower. We loved the lounge beds outside at the pool area.
Good location just near historical city centre. Parking without problems. Hotel is suitable only for overnight. Do not expect any luxury. It is variation on F1 hotels.
The hotel was clean and centrally located. Could catch public transport easily enough It was reasonably quiet at night, the bed was comfortable Internet was good
Good hotel in the south region of Graz, easily accessible via A9 Autobahn. Room was very quiet, clean and comfortable!
