FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

We loved that you could walk the city wall.

We loved that you could walk the city wall. The historic row with shops on different levels is a must. Chester zoo is great. Military Musuem interesting and friendly staff. The riverside walk with plenty of places to eat. Only downside is there in a lot to cram in if you only stay for a long weekend.

Highly recommend that the 'Roman Tour', starting outside the Information Centre in the main square, be experienced. Rob, alias 'Sixtus (D-something, The name of his favourite Roman general) Scipio' turns up in full Roman soldier gear with a magic bag containing all sorts of artefacts which illustrate Roman life in the city as he conducts a tour around the main Roman places of interest in the city. The Roman ruins in the basement of Pret a Manger on the high street are impossible to forget. The Cathedral is vast and impressive, with a quiet garden for rest and reflection and there are many timber framed buildings, both several centuries old and Victorian. Highly recommend Huxley's ice cream from next to the clock on Eastgate, (up the steps) especially eaten in the restful 2nd floor sitting room adjacent, with tea, Chester beer and scone/cake. Look out the porthole along Eastgate to the far church, where the River Dee used to come up to when Chester was an important sea port. Colourful, vibrant city, but not too sprawling to walk around in on foot. I will be back!

Chester is a beautiful small town packed with history and old buildings. We visited the beautiful Chester Cathedral and took a hop-on-hop-off tour to see the most of the town efficiently. We highly recommend to go to Chester Market (e.g. for lunch) and to Bear and Billet for traditional Sunday roast. Dinner at Hickory's Smokehouse at the riverbank was lovely (table reservation recommended), and Roman Garden next to it is a must. A walk around the city center on the old Roman Walls was also nice. There are loads of different kind of shopping possibilities available, and also some very good charity shops worth visiting. We were lucky and had nice spring weather all the time during our visit.

Chester is a melting pot of culture and social classes which I loved. Shopping, bars, restaurants and nightlife, markets and live music. Friendly people and lovely walk along the river. Old buildings full of character plus modern twists. The old cathedral was lovely too. I cant wait to visit this wonderful city again soon!

    So much history.

So much history. The rows are unique incorporating shops, restaurants and bars, some of which are unique and full of historical facts. The sick to death museum is really interesting. Didn't get chance to go in the Cathedral. Chester Zoo near by is amazing.

The location was perfect for our two night stay. Chester has plenty to see/do that can be done walking or by bus. Good shopping and cafes/restaurants. The lady on reception on arrival and the next day was very helpful with recommendations for where to eat and without asking provided me with an extra sheet as the duvet was too hot. The hotel was quiet but I did ensure that my booking did not coincide with a race day or weekend knowing (from experience) that you won't get much sleep.

Location quite simply could NOT be better! Walk out the door and you are on the High Street. Car Parking in the Grosvenor shopping mall with entrance to the Hotel. Staff were warm and friendly and could not do enough Food was amazing in the restaurant - really up there - fine dining. Covid Impact is evident and all Health and Safety precautions are in place. We only stayed one night unfortunately but would highly recommend this property for a relaxing stay in Chester.

The name alone should be enough to create the impression of a hotel with attitude. Thankfully, this doesn't extend to the reception/hospitality staff who were unfailingly polite and helpful. The hotel is located on the canal and is roughly five minutes walk to Chester railway station and the city centre. The terrace at the back of the hotel overlooks the canal and is great for people watching and toasting the end of the day with a sundowner or two.
