Main Street Santander is not ideal, you listen to reggaeton music in many places which is terrible and so disgusting. There are many little restaurants where you can eat for a fair price. The lake view is great but the surroundings are not very nice, the place is not tourist ready, you might go to other little towns like San Pedro, Santa Cruz or San Juan

Panajachel is paradise. The weather is beautiful. Lots of sun, but not too hot most of the time. Lots of great restaurants. There are a lot of markets stalls around with local goods, like hand woven textiles. The lake itself is amazing. Panajachel has access to something for everyone. San Juan for artists, San Pedro for a nice night life, San Antonio for pottery, San Marcos for yoga retreats, etc. All of the towns are just a lancha (ferry) ride away. This is a very clean and safe place to stay. I felt very safe being out during the day and at night also. It is easy to get a tuk tuk to take you where you want to go. There are plenty of places to eat with a variety of menu choices. Most menus have vegetarian options. I have never had a problem with finding great food and the prices are very reasonable.
