Bali Party Capital
One of the first Bali resorts, Kuta has a long, sandy beach and great nightlife - reasons why it’s one of Indonesia’s top tourist spots.
Another popular draw is Kuta surfing. From gentle rollers to lefthanders, the waves are great for all abilities. Several shops in town sell big-brand surf gear at knockdown prices, while other shopping options include Kuta Square, Discovery Mall and Bali Mall Galleria.
There’s also no shortage of places to eat. Street vendors offer local fare, while international cuisine is served in restaurants of the Kuta hotels on Booking.com. When the sun goes down, the heat goes up, as the bars and clubs in party zone Jalan Legian kick into life. For something more refined, the bars by Kuta Beach waterfont are a great spot to watch the sunset with a refreshing cocktail.
If you’re up early enough to see the Sanur Beach sunrise, you might get to see locals throwing traditional offerings into the sea. Spirituality is a big part of Balinese life and there are yoga and meditation classes, not to mention spas to revive the senses.
The gateway to southern Bali, Denpasar Airport is right on the edge of the town, so it won’t be long before you can stretch out and soak up the sun.

For those reading this, your research should make you aware of the following. Bali is small and cramped with narrow roads and heavy traffic which moves at a snail's pace. If you are comfortable on a scooter, you can rent one. We opted to sit the traffic out by hiring a car and driver. You can negotiate a little with the drivers and everyone (ie. hotel staff) knows someone with an airconditioned vehicle who you can hire directly. In my humble opinion, Kuta is the better bet. Seminyak and Nusa Dua are too pricey for what is still Bali. Ubud is much too far from the ocean so ensure you are ready for a 30-45 min drive to get to the beach. If you are willing to walk a little, you can find everything you need in Kuta. Decent food and other shopping. Currency exchange places. An upmarket mall (with globally recognised brands) and a local mall with local brands. Still had sports bars and restaurants but didn't have the club feel which suited us. Could be quieter than other places but everything was there and shop owners weren't as pushy. we loved our massages as well having a few favourite stalls as people were lovely and polite. The Juice House had great drinks and breakfast bowls, and head toward beach and there is a great little Indonesian food cafe on opposite side that was great food for cheap prices. Main street is busy and congested in peak hour. You can grab horse and buggy as there are 4 to choose from or a drinking 'cycling' bus for fun... think there was more drinking than cycling lol! We first visited Kuta over 30 years ago.
We first visited Kuta over 30 years ago. We had the best holiday of our lives there. We have since returned to Bali at least a dozen times and stayed all over the islands key regions including Lovina, Candidasa, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Seminyak etc. All have their positives but the appeal of now massively developed and much cleaner Kuta remains timeless.
