FAQs about hotels in Lucca
On average, 3-star hotels in Lucca cost $155 per night, and 4-star hotels in Lucca are $198 per night. If you're looking for something really special, a 5-star hotel in Lucca can be found for $301 per night, on average (based on Booking.com prices).
Once Italy’s 2nd largest city-state, elegant Lucca remains an important town on any itinerary in beautiful Tuscany. Its instantly recognizable historic center is completely surrounded by Renaissance-era walls which offer a leisurely "passeggiata."
Tree-lined bastions overlook the surrounding modern town, but their low height means that the best photo opportunities of medieval Lucca are from Torre Guinigi. This tower topped with trees overlooks the rooftops below and lush mountains beyond.
The bell tower of San Frediano is even taller and stands back from the elaborate gold mosaic adorning the church’s façade. Equally interesting is Lucca Cathedral’s façade, where every column is unique. The church of San Michele in Foro is on the site of the Roman forum, and the Domus Romana excavations are of a house from a similar era.
Roman amphitheater remains also form foundation stones of the medieval houses, cafés and shops of oval-shaped Piazza Anfiteatro. More sidewalk restaurants line Piazza Napoleone, Lucca’s largest square, around the corner from San Giovanni church, home to a festival celebrating Puccini, the town’s most famous son. Unsurprisingly, music is a big thing here, and summer and winter festivals showcase genres other than just opera.
Booking.com’s range of Lucca accommodations includes apartments, B&Bs and 5-star hotels. Properties are available near the train station, and some include swimming pools and parking.
Lucca is a historic gem, one of my favourite Italian cities.
Lucca is a historic gem, one of my favourite Italian cities.
It has perfect Renaissance city walls, spectacular towers, gorgeous trees, historic palazzi, high quality food and a sophisticated vibe.
It is compact and walkable. Pisa has the tower, but Lucca is the true star. ⭐️

Gorgeous walled town in Tuscany.
Gorgeous walled town in Tuscany. We walked everywhere and visited the large church/ basilica, the famous tower [with trees on top] , and walked along the wall all in one day.
There are a lot of lovely little bistros in town as well.
Cute shops abound and there is just no end to the gorgeous scenery.
One word of caution: do your research on the specific weekend you plan to visit. We accidentally booked during a weekend when 10s of thousands of people descended on the town for a comics and games festival and it was loud and very crowded. Like shuffling through, wall-to-wall people crowded. Unfortunately, this was miserable for us as we were traveling with young kids who we wanted to let run free but in this case we would have immediately lost them in the crowd.

Love Lucca - absolute gem of a city, beautiful with so much to see round every corner. Really clean and inexpensive and a great place to just wander around and explore. Everywhere we ate was good. Nice shopping, lovely churches and buildings. This was our second visit and I would absolutely recommend a city break here. Photographer's heaven!

Lucca was beautiful… a bit like Paris… beautiful buildings, lovely old shops, interesting churches plus music and the fun of the huge medieval city wall. Really great for a long weekend or even a week … easy to get to Florence for a day trip on the train.. easy to get to from Pisa airport without a car. Interesting local food… an all round gem of a city.

If you have not visited Lucca, this is a must for your Italian travels. Inside the wall you are transported to another world. During the day a very busy town with many shops for clothes, souvenirs, perfume, etc. At night, there is a peaceful serenity that surrounds you. You feel very safe, and the atmosphere is very warm. Additionally, there are many restaurants to satisfy your hunger.
We ate at some recommended restaurants which did not disappoint. it is very easy to get around Lucca, but you can get lost, as we did on one occasion. But you easily find your way once again. There are many towers and churches to see and overall, just a fun place to visit for multiple days.

The hotel was in a great location and nice & quiet. We booked all 3 rooms for family. The place was very charming, and very quiet. I think it was an old convent and had walls around the property so that kept it private. The host, Constanza, was very informative when we arrived and personally showed us to our rooms. She also gave good information and directions on how to get inside the walls of Lucca. Breakfast was fantastic and served in a room that opened up to the beautiful garden.
Beautiful modern apartment with parking just inside Lucca walls …very comfy beds and air conditioning much needed !

Staff was truly accommodating. Very decent breakfast. Great location inside the walls but still quiet. Good value for the money. Don’t forget to ask about the history of the hotel!
