The ryokan is amazing. You immediately feel at peace and relaxed walking through the corridors on the way to your room. We found our room to be very generously spaced, with comfy beds, a great shower and bathroom. Saizenin is located right across the temple complex of Koya-san, which contains the picturesque pagoda among other beautiful buildings. Other attractions and museums are very close by, at walking distance, except for perhaps the cementery which is on the other side of the village, but if you walk 10 minutes down the street, there is a bus that leaves you right there, so it wasn't an issue for us. The building itself is in a traditional Japanese style, and of course being in Koya-san means that it is surrounded by forest, with hills to one side, and the street and temple to the other. Its courtyard is also beautiful, the entire thing feels like a museum even though it is actually the place where you are staying at :) Bottom line, staying at Saizenin is an amazing experience. The (vegan) food is unlike anything I've had before, delicious and unique. Every day, there is a meal at around 17:00, and breakfast is at 7:30 I believe, after the morning prayer. Speaking of which, going to the morning prayer in the temple is a must. The monks chant for about half an hour, and along with the beautiful interior of the space, it is a great meditation experience.

It was such an amazing experience. Thank you to the monk staff who were so kind and patient and guided us through meditation custom and practices. Our room included shojin ryori (buddhist vegetarian cuisine) breakfast and dinner which was very balanced and filling. I feel a sense of gratitude and peace coming back to Tokyo. I would like to go every year if I can.

We stayed two nights in Koyasan at Fugen-in temple and it left a long-lasting impression of serenity and kindness. The temple has a long history and many works of art. Attending the morning prayer was a meditative experience. The monks were very friendly and explained about the Haiku temple in Fugen-in's garden. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, so well-balanced and lovingly prepared. The room was clean and had everything we needed, we felt well taken care of. The water of the onsen was very hot and relaxing. Fugen-in's location is perfect, very central and right around the corner of the tourist information. What also stays with us is the beautiful sound of the local cicadas.

Parking right in front, very clean and the food vegetarian food was wonderful. The temple itself is beautiful, and I highly recommend the morning prayer service which is partially in English. There was a female monk that chanted beautifully! Make sure you check in as early as possible to get the full experience.

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, wondered into the info centre Saturday & they were very helpful. Walked through the cemetery & then had lunch in one of the cafes open. Not many open on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday a.m we experience the Ceremony half by the Monks in the main temple. Wouldn’t visit again in the winter as it’s extremely cold.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely. Would have enjoyed having more time to visit the town. We only stayed one night (which is good, because it was very expensive). However, the train logistics from Okayama meant that we ararived in Koyasan about 2pm and so had very little time to see it. We left after lunch the following day. Two fuller days and one night would have been ideal.

Staying at the temple was a delightful experience.

Staying at the temple was a delightful experience. The food was different but very good, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Attending the morning prayer was another highlight, providing a truly memorable experience. The location was excellent, being very close to the bus stop. The staff were extremely nice and accommodating, allowing us to drop off our luggage before the check-in time. Although everything was great, I personally didn't like the heater in the room. I think it uses some kind of oil, and for me personally, the oil smell was a little too strong. Next time, I would prefer a room with an attached washroom. Since it's an old temple, it doesn't have central heating, which is understandable, but it gets a little cold outside of the room when going to use the washrooms. The rooms aren't that comfortable, but we already knew that since we went for the experience, not for comfort. Just wanted to add that!

    Nature and spirituality

Nature and spirituality We ended our 3 week trip to Japan with 2 nights in Koyasan at a buddhist temple. It was a magical place, completely different from everything we had visited in Japan beforehand. The temples with their architecture, the local food and the kind locals really made this an unforgettable experience. On our last day we went for a hike on the Women´s trail, had a great lunch close to the Daimon gate and took a 2h walk through the Okunoin cementary which is one of the most incredible places I have been so far. Go without any expectations and it will be the a unique experience!

We stayed at the Joki-in temple for 1 night, right in the center, on October 13. The town was very crowded with foreign tourists - funicular, bus, shrines, parks, restaurants. The various sites are interesting to visit, but you are not alone. On the way back from Daimon gate, we left the main road and walked in the part of the town where people live. We were alone and enjoyed the walk. We walked to see the Okunoin cemetery at night: there were very few people and it was really interesting. I suppose most tourists just come for the day because of the bedrooms' high prices the well-located temples.

This has been my first shukubo stay in Japan, and it was a great experience. I attended the morning chanting of the monks as well as the evening meditation. The onsen was good, and the vegan dinner and breakfast, served for all the guests in the comfortable hall, were a good way to better learn the life of the monks. I obtained my first Goshuincho (the book for red temple/shrine stamps) at Koyasan Sanadabo Rengejoin which is also a way to remember staying here. I would gladly come here once again.

This is not a normal hotel it's a Buddhist temple run by monks. But it is incredibly efficient. The rooms are traditional and simple, tatami mats and no chairs. The monks serve a vegetarian feast in the room - eat sitting on the floor in your yakuta (provided) and then lay out your futons. There's an onsen bath downstairs too. Next day wake at 6.30 and go to ceremonies in the temple. An experience.
