Located in the Amazon rainforest, this hotel features tours to the jungle, a massage spa overlooking the Madre de Dios forest and rooms with hammocks and balconies. Our trip to Inkaterra Amazonica was an amazing travel experience. Anderson was our knowledgeable guide who showed us all of the amazing creatures and scenery. Our concierge was there to meet every need we had even before we thought to ask. The hotel had very comfortable and clean rooms, with amazing food selections, and everyone we met provided amazing service to meet all of our needs. This will truly be one of our most memorable experiences of a lifetime.

Pretty small town, and only visited the area around centro (Plaza de Armas), but it was well-kept and had plenty of restaurants and a bank. Ate at two nearby restaurants (Burgos's and Carrion32), both of which were quite good and reasonably priced. It's also only 15-20 soles to ride a tuktuk-like taxi to or from the airport, and each fits up to 3x passengers if you are not carrying a ton of luggage. The taxis are fun too!
The town itself is basic but it's a great base for many nearby places to see wildlife. There are a lot of great day tours in the area, so you can stay in Puerto two or three days and do day tours while you organize an overnight trip. Many tour agencies charge more for online reservations because platforms charge them up to 25% commission. If you go to Puerto Maldonado you can book all your tours in person. There is a small street just off the Plaza de Armas with a dozen agencies. Walk around, compare service and prices before choosing day tours. Do a few day tours and then go to an eco-lodge for a 3 or 4 day trip into Tambopata National Park.
There is not much to do in the city itself. No reason to visit the city except as a starting point for visits to the Tambopata reserve near by. That is certainly worth a visit of several days, Lago Sandoval, Collpa de Chuncho, adventure day with canopy walks, ziplines, kayaks, etc. The three different guides we experienced during our stay were excellent, knowledgeable, patient and friendly. Lots of nature to see in this luscious jungle area.
The amount of unique life in the Amazon, right outside Puerto Maldonado was stunning and our tour guides’ knowledge of everything was so impressive. Did not get to spend much time in town but the beauty and wonder just up the river where we stayed was astounding.
We spent an entire month in Peru. We all agreed that we could have skipped Puerto Maldonado. If we could have left the same day we arrived, we would have, but I had built in an extra day because some times the flights are delayed. I can't think of anything to recommend this city. People should visit Arequipa and Cusco for beauty.
Nice little outpost town on the banks of the Madre de Dios river. Some surprisingly good food and friendly locals. Suggest finding a hotel with A/C unless you;re looking for the 'full experience"

Our stay at Hacienda Herrera was magical. You are greeted by friendly staff and surrounded by the most spectacular scenery of the Amazon. Kenny and Ruth are wonderful and attentive hosts. Our favorite part was gathering in the main house for home cooked, fresh, organic meals and conversation with other guests. I did my research on lodges in Puerto Maldonado, and I am glad I found Hacienda Herrera. It's a special place that will make your Amazonian adventure one to remember.

The two guys behind the front desk were exceptional. They were super friendly and organized two tours for us. One tour was a piranha fishing and bird watching on a gorgeous lake at sunset and the other was a parrot lick early in the morning. Our guides were Boris and Aari and they were exceptional! They have a SLOTH and a baby roaming around the property. It was soooo cool! The lodge was at a great location and the rooms were clean and comfortable.

Inkaterra made our stay so easy. Guides are assigned based on length of stay, and the hotel gives each party a recommended activity plan. We participated in 2-3 activities each day from hikes to a canopy tour an canoeing. We saw much wildlife including exotic birds, giant otters and night monkeys. Luis, our guide, was very personable, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The food, which is included, was very good.
Everything looked sparking clean and the hotel manager Sergio was so nice and helpful. And did I mention they’ve got HOT water? Most places in Puerto Maldonado have only cold water. I missed hot water so much after a few days in the jungle.
The staff went above and beyond for me, they're outstanding. The hotel is near town, making transport easy, but feels remote and private.
