The purpose of the trip (my second) was to go up Huaynapicchu but when I went to get the pass to go enter Machu Picchu, the government official (who was really rude) would not sell me the pass to include Huanapicchu: He said that is was "closed for January and February"! I went up anyway and found that, not only was Huanapicchu not closed they still had space (they only allow a certain number up at a time). It was the rainy season but the sky was blue and the sun was shining, the perfect time to go up. The officials at the gate would not let us up despite the fact that they had room and the cost was only NS10 (about US$3.00).The way to avoid the governmental BULL is to book ahead but that is not always possible. Machu Picchu is indescribable but take the time to visit the other lesser "touristized" fantastic sights around Cusco (such as Pisaq, Ollantaytambo,,Chinchero, Moray, Tipon and Pikillacta (sp)) which are as amazing but less "developed" than Machu Picchu.
I really advise people to spend 2 nights there. After arrival you shall buy your Machu Picchu ticket (near main square) and your bus ticket for the next day. If you have the energy and fitness do not miss the hike of Machu Picchu mountain (ticket to mountain hike must be included in the purchased ticket, it cannot be bought on site). This hike was the highlight of my trip. The view from top of the mountain was priceless. The Sanctuary lodge restaurant was not as expensive as I thought. In Aguas Calientes there is practically nothing but the hot springs to visit.. the river though is gorgeous and you can spend your time in one of the numerous restaurants or just sitting in main square.. quite entertaining.
Machu Picchu was incredible. The entire experience was amazing, a dream come true. It was very easy to travel from Cusco to Machu Picchu village. I loved the Peru Rail Vista train ...amazing views. The town of Aguas Calientes is small and easy to get around on foot. I easily found the bus ticket booth, and bus station. Locals are very helpful. My favourite restaurant was Indiofeliz, I would highly recommend it! Overall, I was impressed by how efficient the tourism of Machu Picchu operates.
Get up early and catch a bus to the site. No point of doing a hike-most of the hike road is the same as bus road, so you have to look out for vehicles; plus save energy for MP. In MP do a hike to Sun Gate, really nice views. Prepare-it might rain! In Aguas Callientes eat llama steak at TotosHouse-very delicious!
My 86-yr old mother was able to walk 1/2 of Machu Picchu because my Cusquenan husband and other tourists willingly assisted her during difficult ascents and descents. My 79 -yr old aunt, recovering from back surgery, had a more difficult time. Had there been handrails, she could have enjoyed so many more aspects of this magnificent citadel. Despite that, we enjoyed the fantastic view from the cafeteria near the entrance. It will be an experience shared which we will long remember fondly.
Well, Machu Picchu does not need much explanation - the site is amazing but the attracts unfortunately also lots of tourists and therefore comes with the whole drawback of the tourist industry. The bus ride up to the site is outrageous expensive if you compare it with other transportation options in Peru. Machu Picchu village is actually still nice although it´s only there because of the tourists. For the site you should definitely take a guide who you can find at the entrance.
The receptionist at the hotel was very friendly and speaks English. The room was very clean with really nice details arranged on the bed. Our bedroom had a Jacuzzi which was well used. The toilet and showers were clean and the water pressure was really good. Complimentary breakfast from 5am helped a lot when visiting Machu Picchu. You can also asked the day before for a doggie bag.
Loved the location - so central and close to the train/bus station, breakfast was fantastic. The staff were especially helpful. I arrived early so they were very accomodating, to look after my luggage and use of a bathroom to clean up (after a walk on the inca trail - it was very much needed). They even took care of my laundry for me. The room was very nice and grande!
