We looked at Setubal through a different eye than a vacationer, because we are scouting it as a potential new place to call home. On the surface, the town seems a little tired and gritty. I do have to say that it took the entire four days for the city to grow on me in such a way that we are now considering it as a place to live. It is small and quiet. And the restaurants are just alright. We missed the weekend music festival that was coming up; that would have been nice to experience how the people of Setubal celebrate and enjoy themselves.
Setubal is a really charming town, being on the coast it has a lovely refreshing breeze. It's easy to find everything you need, a great choice of restaurants and bars and cafes, a supermarket and wonderful local food market. The beaches close by are clean and accessible and if you have access to a car the mountains are a short drive. It feels really local and not touristy, with very affordable portugese food. I loved wandering the streets in the old town . It's really well situated for trips to Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra. Travelling on trains and ferries is easy .
The city is compact, clean and pretty. It has many interesting shops and galleries. It is easy to move around, no hills. The seafront is delightful and there is always something happening, river traffic etc. The restaurants and cafes are friendly and the food excellent. Look for the black cat on the roof of the Information centre in the square. There are many trips into the interior and on the sea, also horse riding and a trip to Troia, its peninsular with great marina restaurants. Take the catamaran. The market is superb, everything clean and fresh and so much choice.
National Park on your doorstep, which means some tough hikes. Great beaches in the National Park or a short, convenient ferry-ride away on the Troia Peninsula. If you have a car, you can take the ferry to Cais Sul on Troia and visit the exclusive resort of Comporta at the southern base of the Peninsula. From Setubal, you can even head north into Lisbon for a fancier restaurant or a more lively night out.
Setúbal is an interesting place to visit and offers a variety of cultural markers from natural settings: beaches, the estuary, the surrounding hills to food and wine, monuments and a long and distinguished history. Not big but neither small either. The city is undergoing a slow transformation and you can see many vestiges of the past in buildings, customs, bars and restaurants, the amazing mercado do livramento blending in well with a new, more modern infrastructure and slow but steady renovation of the old housing districts. Well worth the visit!
I am Portuguese so I knew where to go. We went to eat fish (recommend Leo, Pinga amor and Casa Santiago) and go to the beach as stop on our road trip (Porto-Faro) The best beaches are in Portinho da arrabida (Galapinhos) We had a car so was easy to go to big supermarkets but in Setubal you have everything within walking distance.
Setúbal
Amazing stay, Guilherme and his wife have a fantastic property. Guilherme gave a local restaurant suggestion (one of the best meals we had in Portugal and fantastic value) and great tourist information about the area, all while enjoying a complimentary glass of local Muscatel. The room was top class, huge spotless and plenty of nice touches; my girlfriend loved the ritual soap/shower gels. Lovely continental breakfast on the terrace the following morning. Our only regret was not having booked a second night.
Setúbal
Pedro and Patricia were amazing hosts. Unbelievable clean, big and very decorative room. The style is on of a kind. The bathroom with a nice rain shower is superb. Breakfast was very delicious and the shared kitchen is brand new. They like to chat and share stories 100 % recommend Best value for money in Portugal
It's the best hotel in Portugal that we have stayed. It's true personal touch and full of history. The hotel gives us free upgrade and introduce us to the charming history of the family. The room are very quite and comfortable and food, to a level of fine dining. Definitely will come back in the future.
Setúbal
The hotel was super well located, just around the corner of everything that Setúbal has to offer. The room was very clean, they offered a welcome drink both at arrival and in the room, and staff was always at my disposal for any questions I had about the area. Would definitely stay here again!
Setúbal
The building was beautifully renovated. We had a wonderful breeze off the ocean all night through the beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows. The location couldn't have been better. The hosts greeted us with a nice treat to welcome us. Setubal was our favorite place we visited in Portugal
It was a very comfortable experience. The hotel is super clean with super nice staff, and all for a good value. Room was a bit small but it was enough for our stay. Enjoyed the breakfast that was included in price of the stay. :)
Sofia - who runs this charming boutique hotel made our stay fantastic! She deserves great applause. The hotel is eclectic and the decor is fun and sensual and comfortable. A little bit out of the ordinary but really very fun.

The hosts were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They really love their area and made us excited to explore. Armed with the tips we're had a great day in Setúbal.
Very nice hotel, friendly stuff and good breakfast. Near city centre and restaurants. Near beaches and ferry to Troia. Comfortable beds and nice rooms.
Setúbal
The location was special, with beautiful views, a charming environment, and friendly animals. It is a 15-20 min walk into the center of Setubal.
The hotel is small and intimate and the personel really friendly and accommodating. The breakfast was excellent and everything clean and neat.
Location is great for all the points of interest in Setúbal. Rooms are spacious and full of light, they have a tiny balcony.
breakfast was always fresh with good variety. hotel is walking distance to everything, parks, shopping, ocean and boat dock
Nice old place, calm surroundings, close by to Setubal and the Arrábida beaches/ mountain, nice pool, silent rooms.
Modern hotel, clean room, amazing breakfast, great WiFi, helpful staff. Great price quality ratio.
Very easy to reach. Large parking just un front of the hotel.
Setúbal
Otherwise, everything. The hosts are an absolute dream, for starters. The location is remote enough to be quiet and mostly surrounded by empty fields but not remote enough that you can't go out to explore the area (Setúbal is around 15 minutes away by car). The bubble is amazing, very out of the box and the bed is very confortable. AC allows you to sleep in without overheating from the sun but do take an eye mask if your sleep is bothered by natural light. Small pool with a lot of lounge space for an afternoon on the sun, and of course a very warm and bubbly private jacuzzi on each deck, which is amazing under the stars. Everything is spotless and the cleaning is immaculate. Shower utilities, bath robes and towels for pool are provided. Breakfast at around 9am with eggs, cheeses, bread, yogurt, fruit, fresh orange juice and coffee, probably other options if you ask in advance. We took a couple snacks from home to enjoy late at night as there are no markets/shops on the immediate surroundings. My only regret is that I didn't pet Elizabetha, the cat!
Setúbal
Everything, the windmill is so lovely furnished and has lots of space. It has everything you may need in the kitchen and even more. The best thing of course is the view from the window - the first thing you see when you wake up is the ocean and in the bathroom there is a window looking out on the garden and the sea. So brush your teeth and meditate :) The hosts Paula and Maria were very nice and welcoming. It was my bf birthday so they did everything to make us feel comfortable on this special day. Thanh you!
