Exploring Los Angeles, the place where movies are made, you feel like you’re in a dream. Santa Monica Pier is the end point of the fabled Route 66, while just south is bohemian Venice Beach, lined by tall, swaying palms. Go slightly inland from the boardwalk to catch a glimpse of the canals that earned the area its name.
Head north to the golden beach and stunning scenery of Malibu and see why movie stars over the decades have settled here. Also popular with the rich and famous are Bel Air and Beverly Hills, home to exclusive Rodeo Drive.
And the reason for all this glitz and glamour? Hollywood, of course! Sitting high on a hill, the iconic sign is visible for miles around, while below the gold stars on Hollywood Boulevard immortalize celebrities of past and present. Be there on premiere night to see them grace the red carpet of Grauman’s Chinese Theater.
Over the hill is Universal Studios, with behind-the-scenes tours as well as rides. Next door are the Warner Brothers Studios, and Paramount Studios are closer to Downtown LA.
Whether you decide to live like a star in a luxury LA hotel or choose a cheap motel through Booking.com, it’s worth renting a car to get around this sprawling city and out to Los Angeles Airport (LAX).
Los Angeles is a bit of a dump, to be honest; noisy, dirty and with the streets choked with traffic 24/7. There are much better places to stay nearby such as Orange Country, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Santa Monica, even Glendale. I'd only return to L.A. itself if business demanded it. Glad we only spent three nights there.
I would not stay here for more than one night. Very strong smell of cannabis Many functions going on daily which resulted in no sleep as noise very loud. Asked desk to ask the people to quieten down at 2am and they said they can’t
Be sure to have enough time planned for every activity you're going to do. Long distances. And heavy traffic big parts of the day. I had to skip several activities I had planned, because the traffic was too heavy and it would have taken me too long to move form A to B. Could have been so much better if there was better public transportation there! On the plusside: sunny and warm weather..
Santa Monica, Venice area are the best and the ones I personally enjoyed the most. 1 day, 1,5 is good. Beverly Hills is a very luxurious area but a bit boring to see or do things. One morning/afternoon is enough. All of LA has a big homeless problem, unfortunately it happens mainly in major city's, but after traveling to many, this is one of the worst I’ve seen. A lot of them are just trying their best to deal with another day, but there some who leave food and trash in the middle of the street, streets in general are very dirty, others who are just shouting things in the street normally offensive. Dowtown LA don’t bother going. It’s the worst part and doesn’t have that much to see. Maybe I had big expectations after going to New York, and like I said all major cities have these problems (except gulf countries), but this one was one of the worst I’ve seen. I would recommend maybe 3 days, 1 hollywood area, griffin observatory ( a must) and other for venice/ santa monica. If it’s summer maybe ad another one for the beach area (santa monica/venice). I stayed a total of 5 days, and travelled to other parts like nevada, arizona and utah. I would shorten the days in LA and check other parts of the state and the other ones around it, specially the country side.
It's everything you would expect in a large city that seems to be overrun by homelessness. Some interesting features in the area, but I wouldn't rush back. I don't care for the trash and litter everywhere. I would tolerate LA for a day or two to see what I wanted, but I don't believe I will be craving a return to the area right away.
I always plan the places I’m going to visit in LA before I am actually there. It’s always going to take a bit to get anywhere because of traffic, but it’s worth it with almost unlimited things to do. The food, art, architecture, and culture is fantastic. We always hit Philippe’s for French dip, Wackos, LACMA, and whatever concert or show is playing during the time we’re there. And there’s always sports for people who are into that.
