FAQs about hotels in Monterey

A Wild Coastline and Even Wilder Sealife

Known for beautifully undulating coastline attracting a wealth of wildlife, laid-back Monterey is on a small peninsula. Though now more famous for Monterey Jack cheese, it was once an important sardine fishing town. Some former canning factories now house galleries and shops on a street renamed Cannery Row after a novel by John Steinbeck. A museum and his former home in nearby Salinas can be visited.

The fantastic Monterey Bay Aquarium houses a fascinating range of local sealife, which is so prevalent here that you can often see seals basking on craggy beaches, or sea lions roaring away under piers in Fisherman’s Wharf. Whalewatching tours also depart from here.

South is the Monterey State Historic Park, site of historic buildings including Custom House and the Old Whaling Station with a path made from whalebone. To the east are a couple of Monterey hotels on the beach on Booking.com, and there are also several Monterey hotels with indoor pools.

Right by Monterey Peninsula Airport is one of the city’s 7 golf courses, and there are 3 golf courses near the Laguna Seca Raceway.

Whether you’re here for the Monterey Jazz Festival, or for driving the Big Sur Pacific coast road to the south, if you’re staying with kids, don’t forget to check out the Dennis the Menace Park.

The 17-mile drive was beautiful, time it to make sure you are not going too late or the fog rolls in and you cannot see much. The aquarium was okay, for the price ($65 pp) I was expecting more. It's great for families with kids and there are more kid friendly areas there than other aquariums I have seen. Don't skip the drive to Big Sur, you can still go into Big Sur and the drive was beautiful and the trees are amazing. Cannery Row is very touristy, however there is a lot a historical information sprinkled throughout and makes for interesting reading.

Can see local sites in one day- did Fishermans wharf- 17 mile drive- Carmel- cannery row-if you’re into shopping it’s fine- we enjoyed all the views of the ocean the most! Free trolley available to shuffle between areas- parking is expensive depending where you park but that’s expected at the beach.drive along coast- you can find free parking towards area attractions have to pay

Monterey has a really nice vibe, quite relaxed and upmarket.

Monterey has a really nice vibe, quite relaxed and upmarket. It's on the chilly side for some, not quite breaking 20C in our July visit, but still pleasant. Whale watching is a must do (we used Princess Whale Watching). We really enjoyed the many breweries and wine tastings available. There are some good restaurants downtown (Rosine's was my fave). The Aquarium was quite disappointing - very expensive with small enclosures for the otters and penguins. Also way too crowded. Also a good base to visit Carmel-by-the-sea and drive a little of the PCH to Big Sur.

Monterey is beautiful city worth the visit.

Monterey is beautiful city worth the visit. I would recommend staying couple days to have time to see and do more. I live in bay area so it is along drive and traffic is very bad going to Monterey and also on way back . We did eat at Esteban restaurant at casa munras hotel very good food and service. Lot 9f traffic in Monterey even on weekday. We managed to get around by walking to local coffee shop and restaurants

Monterey is a great little city.

Monterey is a great little city. All the restaurants we ate were great and close by. Carmel Beach was beautiful. We were graced by the nice warm sun during the morning and up to about 3pm. Sardine Factory, Krua Thai, Wave Street Cafe, The Butter House in Seaside was excellent. Took the 17 mile drive. As visitors we paid $12.50 entrance fee. Which goes towards restaurants on the 17 mile drive. We used it at the Hay's. The view was beautiful. Lot's of seafood restaurants at the Fisherman's Wharf. I just couldn't find one that served Branzino Fish.

What a wonderful hotel! We especially like the welcome drink on arrival and it was a nice touch to meet the other guests. Lovely big room and the fireplace was very special. There was a travel cot (crib) waiting for us on arrival for our baby. Nice bathroom and facilities. Fantastic location right near Cannery Row.
