FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

    Loved my trip to Canberra.

Loved my trip to Canberra. Enjoyed the Art Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, the War Memorial, Parliament House. Some very good restaurants. The weather was sunny, the people were friendly and everything was clean and fresh. Easy to drive and plenty of parking at major venues.

A paradise for booklovers and museum crushers, not for a tourist. Compares to Sydney and Melbourne, Canberra is more political and lower key, so I think it's good and quiet place for learning and researching via National Library of Australia and plenty of national museums.

We took 4 year old grandson and went to the Dinosaur Museum at Gold Creek and he enjoyed it. Questicon was good for us too. Only activity not value for money was Yarralumla Playstation. Paid $10 each + animal food cost to feed the very few animals they had. Train not working. Mini Golf Course was fun though expensive.

We had a wonder trip, Parliament House complete with protest on the lawn, (democracy in action!), National Art Gallery (Jackson Pollack 'Blue Poles' and Sidney Nolans Ned Kelly series) Long lunch by the lake at Rustica, trip to Perisher for a ski, and relaxing in the comfortable Hotel Kurragong, and a trip to Yass for a bit of history checking out the cemetery for ancestors :)

Room was really well laid out with mini kitchen, seating area, and generous size bathroom. Everything was clean and seemed pretty new. Super comfortable bed with fantastic pillows! Very welcoming and helpful staff at reception - check in and out were quick and easy. Car parking available for 20 dollars per day directly under the hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Canberra.

The price is good value and the rooms, though very small, were perfectly adequate for me as a solo traveller, as I really only needed somewhere to slept as I had things to go to both on the evening I stayed there and the following day. I will definitely use this hotel again as it’s a great location for me as only a short drive to the home of people I visit in Canberra most often.

I returned to this hotel for two reasons, 1. location - excellent area of Canberra, close to great eateries, lake and city and 2. the bed I had my first stay was soooo comfortable, but was a little let down as the bed the second visit wasn't the same quality. Still have no hesitations staying here in future.
