The area was amazing. So glad we stayed the night so we could see the city at nighttime. I wish we would have signed up for a tour, as that would have been helpful in understanding the history of the area. I would recommend 2 nights in Matera so you have enough time to explore the city as well as the caves.

It is one of the most fascinating destination you can visit for a day or two. The view from the top is beautiful from morning to night. You will end up doing many steps and during mid summer can be fairly challenging but it is better than when it rains and roads get extremely wet. My personal favourite spot of the view was from Convent of Saint Agostino where you can see the floating city and the road surrounding.

I cannot recommend Matera more highly.
I cannot recommend Matera more highly. You will not want to walk around all day every day due to the layout of the City - wherever you go, you have to walk up and down staircases on old cobblestones or uphill and down again. It's hard on the legs unless you are very fit. There are sight-seeing buses and buggies for hire, but I didn't try any of these as you don't get to see the 'proper' Matera, which is all of the back streets.
I went in early June and it was still early 30's and very hot at night.
There is a lot of choice for restaurants - most you can walk into in the evening and not have to worry about booking.
You must try to see Matera at night-time/sunset/sunrise - it's a treat. It is so picturesque, you will be glued to your camera/ phone.

Had wanted to visit Matera for many years and it lived up to our expectations. Beautiful historic city and easy to walk around. We had a couple of good meals , one terrible and fine dining experience a massive let down. This can happen in any city just your luck sometimes you can be unlucky.

Always depends on your expectations, but our feeling was Matera was definitively worth 1 full day or 2, especially if you hike to the point of view on the other side of the little canyon, and/or visit a few historic monuments. We could not visit the famous trogloditic crypts of the original sin since the touristic site to make the compulsory reservations (1 day in advance) is such an absurd mess.
Loved everything.
Our standard room was fabulous!
Comfortable bed.
Best location in Matera.
Staff a delight. Special call out to Angela at Breakfast who was so lovely to us. Terrace best views.
Restaurant evening meal absolutely outstanding. So thoroughly recommended.
Franchesco C. Stunningly helpful and engaging host.
One of the best hotel and restaurant experiences we have ever had in Italy.
Parking and transfer easy and efficient
Just book this hotel!!..
Wow wow wow, this hotel is absolutely beautiful in every way. The whole place shines and gleams, my cave room was so special and it is in the perfect location within the Sassi-as a solo female traveller I was able to walk easily from my doorstep to all the tourist attractions. The service is excellent-room seemed to be turned down 3 times a day. Spa was gorgeous, as were my treatments. Matera is the most beautiful place to stay and explore,a real hidden gem.
The apartment is as you see in the photos, everything clean and very comfortable beds. Good breakfast is provided; varied juices, milk, coffee, fresh fruit, toasts and yogurts, much better than most hotels in Italy. The location is top as you are right in the centre. And the host goes far and beyond to make your stay enjoyable, from explaining a bit of history about Matera to providing a complementary bottle of wine. 100% recommend to stay here.
We loved this hotel. It e as centrally located and a perfect base for exploring the fascinating town of Matera. Our room was in one of the cave dwellings and offered a totally unique stay with all the modern facilities of a super clean room, fantastic shower and very comfortable bed. The buffet style breakfast had a great variety of quality local produce and all members of staff were delightful.
Our "cave room" was fantastic, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Great views from our window and from the hotel premises. Also the best breakfast we had in Italy by quite a margin, with everything from newly baked foccacia to fresh fruits. The staff was helpful with informing us on where to walk to see the most of Matera. No luxury hotel, but everything we wanted from a hotel in Matera.
Just to keep it short - unique place with the best breakfast we have ever had in Italy. There might be plenty of cave hotels and bnb's available in Matera but no one can compete with Al Convento's various handmade table served delicious breakfast dishes.. The room in the cave was superb, perfectly clean and well equipped. Owners were very helpful providing useful guidance.
The view from our "Cave" sold it. What a view for breakfast or a sun down drink. Fantastic bathroom, super comfy mattress and everything you need. You will be using your calf muscles more than usual in Matera...so no cowboy boots please ladies. (What's that all about !) I've seen two people fall over due to the polished stone. Can't fault the Hotel, loved it.
Location was superb. Loved that they only have a few rooms in this hotel. Rooms were amazing. Super clean, great bedding, great bathrooms. Staff was super friendly and helpful and accommodating. Our stay here was a major highlight of our 2 week Italy roadtrip. It's obvious they take pride in their property. A total "gem"
The hotel staff are exceptional. The location is 5 minutes from the Matera sassi. The room is very spacious and clean and the bed is so comfortable! There is complimentary water and coffee in the room which is a nice touch. On check out the receptionist gave us a free bag with water ad snacks. Top class hotel!
Amazing hotel, by far our best one in our 23 hotel trip through Italy. I recommend to stay here for sure. Amazing staff, very friendly and close, very good attitude. The hotel is beautiful, a true Matera experience. The SPA is delightful and very relaxing. The rooms are nice and the bed is very comfortable.
YOU'RE IN A CAVE WITH A HOT TUB! I can't say enough about how cool it was to stay in a cave that had all the modern appointments of a 4 star hotel. It was like something out of a dream. And then to wake up to an exceptional breakfast brought to your room was the cherry on top. Fantastic!
the hotel is just in the middle of the Matera. very nicely decorated room has everything you need. Great breakfas in the morning with a fascinating piano recital from owner. Super staff, recommended also a very good restaurant nearby. Would definetely stay one more time if come back.
This was the best accomodation i stayed at for the 3 months i travelled around Italy , the rooms were 5 star and the location was perfect to visit the old town of Matera. I will definitely be back and confidently recommend this place to all my friends and family.
This resort far exceeded our expectations. The location and view are the best in town. Breakfast was amazing and the staff was one of the best we came across in Italy. Staying is a cave is the only way to go in Matera so look no further.
very awesome and design forward renovation. the juxtaposition of the ancient cave dwelling with modern amenities was super cool. it was our favorite hotel of the trip. immaculately clean. hosts were amazing. fantastic location.
What an amazing place!!! Our room was in a cave felt like stepping back in time but with all the comfort and amenities of a modern hotel. Great location short walk up the hill to see the sights of Matera.
View from hotel was amazing. Rooms are spacious and well designed. Great location for exploring all the things Matera has to offer. Staff are lovely and go above and beyond to help with anything
Boutique cave hotel with attention to detail. Great location in the Sassi with walking distance to sites and restaurants. Fantastic young brother/sister team that we’re beyond fun and helpful.
