The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza drenched with vibrant pink blossoms, you might have to pinch yourself. The amazing location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
But wait, there's more. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the largely intact Greek Theater has amazing views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Great summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars feature live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, with a clock tower and church overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the center of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the southwest, there's a long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and to the north is the bay by Mazzaró.

Great place to use as a base for exploring the region - Mount Etna is a must see/do, as are the villages of . Castelmola and Savoca. Found Taormina much more expensive, touristy and busy than other parts of Sicily that we stayed in. Taormina is a spectacular town. Walking through the street is a delight and the views from the city are amazing. Seeing Isola Bella from the lookout or smoke rising from Mt Etna in the distance are so special. Taormina is one of the most beautiful places I have visited. So much choice of places to eat. Lots of shops and we loved people watching of an evening. Lots of history and absolutely loved the Teatro Antico where we saw Simple Minds. The skyline is dominated by Mount Etna which because is active was smoking. Taormina is the most expensive place in Sicily, it's very crowded but it's also beautiful. If you're not on a budget, it's an absolute must-visit, the food and drinks are excellent, there's a lot of choice, and there's a lot to see. Taormina is magical.
Taormina is magical. It casts a spell of happiness and contentment over all who are lucky enough to visit. The streets feel unchanged by time although offering up to the minute shopping at the same time. Although we went with a list or recommendations you will find your own with any side street or experience. A truly wonderful place to explore. The only downside is that Taormina is so popular it is very expensive and some of the Sicilian charm is lost when they are clearly far too busy and trying to manage the crowds.Guest review bySusanUnited Kingdom
