It is worthy on the way back to stop about 2 stations before the final station in Zermatt and make the rest of this way down to Zermatt on foot. The view and a huge waterfall on the way will make the walk worthy!
hiking up to Gornergrad is fantastic - personally next time I will not go all the way up as it is almost a shock to the system after 4 hours of beauty walking and meeting all the tourists who arrived with the train. however still a great place
The historic Gornergrat railway takes around 30 mins to get to the top of the Gornergrat skiing area. From there you get a great view of the Monte Rosa mountain and all the others in that range. Fantastic skiing area, great for anyone low-intermediate to advanced. Great mountain restaurants along the various ski runs back to Zermatt.
Didn't register until I got to the top that I could hop on & hop off on the same return ticket. The conductor on the glacier express had been telling people that interail were not entitled to a discount for the Gornergrat, but I convinced him and it saved time avoiding the queue in Zermatt.
Mountain scenery with their evergreens, the presence of snow on Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn and of course, the majestic Matterhorn.
Slopes are easy to access via the stunning Gornergrat train which is also great for non skiers and is included on your ski pass. Ski over to Italy for lunch though, much better than in Zermatt. The gluhwein in the Riffleburg restaurant gets the prize for best in resort.. leave time for this at the end of the day to watch the last of the sun behind the Matterhorn then go down on the Gornergrat after the pistes have closed.
Take the Gornergrat Bahn to the top and hike down back to the village. The views at the top are spectacular and the hike down is invigorating.
