Totally over-rated. If you enjoy the combined unique odor of urine, marijuana, and vomit all rolled into one, then Bourbon Street is for you. But it's not for us. Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras is an absolute spectacle—superb energy, non-stop music, and a wild, unforgettable atmosphere! I managed to collect a mountain of beads, and let’s just say, I was treated to a few flashes of some truly impressive lingerie from some gorgeous ladies. The whole experience is a hilarious, over-the-top party that you really have to see to believe. Bourbon Street is for sure an interesting place, and it is also extremely crowded and noisy. I am not sure how anybody can keep up a normal conversation while walking down the street. There are basically all types of music played, maybe 4 or 5, individuals or group, on both sides of a the same sidewalk. Also just about everybody warns tourists of unsafe the street is as soon as the sun is down--which in winter means past 5PM. Whatever you do, if you decide to bring children to NOLA, especially children that are still in strollers, do not take a child's stroller to Bourbon street, especially at night. I wouldn't say it's dangerous, but rather really not appropriate for kids to be on Bourbon street and there is often very loud music playing from the bars and street performers that might be tough on little ears. Easy to find and easy to park your car, but the best part is the location - in the French quarters. Around three blocks from the infamous Bourbon Street, which is close enough to walk to there (and also to the jazz quarters, which is about 7 blocks away) but also far enough so you will not be disturbed by all the party going on there.
