I liked St Magnus Cathedral, the Museum and also visited the ruins of the Bishop's Palace and the Earls'. It was exceedingly useful to finally locate the bus terminal and utilise it to get to Scarabrae which was excellent, and has a lovely info centre and Cafe; and Skail House (total contrast) which was included in the admission ticket. The next day I went to Stromness to visit the Pier Gallery which was superb. Spent a Lovely day walking and enjoying the little Braes etc. A enjoyed Stromness very much. I was dismayed to find that the bus service didn't easily get me to other sites of interest, like the Italian chapel. Also Maeshoe (sp) was booked out for days. Very Happy to have visited Orkney, but it was challenging without a carGuest review byAnonymous - 10.0
Great coastal hikes. Unbelievable archaeology.
Great coastal hikes. Unbelievable archaeology. Mellow people. Decent public transportation on Mainland. Long, rich history. Beautiful place. Good charity shops and much locally made jewelry. Welcoming services at the cathedral and the Catholic Church. Good restaurants, but suggest you make reservations in advance.Guest review byBethUnited States - 2.0

The Orkneys was vey beautiful with fantastic scenery but our trip was spoilt by the Stromness Hotel that we stayed at. (BIG MISTAKE). The owners should go to school and learn how to run a hospitality business as they haven't got a clue, unless you are the same ethnicity as them.Guest review byDavidCanada - 6.0

Dounby is situated at a crossroads with an hotel, post office, pharmacy, co op supermarket and a couple of craft shops. Everything you need for stay of a couple of nights. However there is no choice of other places to eat and drink unless you drive to the Merkister Hotel a couple of miles up the road and it's not always possible to have meal there as we discovered because they can be booked up.Guest review byJanetUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We thought the village of St Margarets Hope was the prettiest of all the villages on Orkney; there is a lovely bay and harbour with two old fashioned inns in which to stay or eat. There are some lovely walks out of the village and a ferry that goes from the harbour to the Scottish mainland in one hour.Guest review byJaneUnited Kingdom - 8.0

We have visited Orkney a number of times but have always been based around Stromness. It was nice to see another part of the island. The Sands Hotel is within easy walking distance and serves lunch and dinner.Guest review byAmanda - 10.0

Finstown is a nice little town about 10 minutes from Kirkwall. It is ideally located to visit some of the island's premier attractions. It is quiet and peaceful but still within a very easy drive to Kirkwall.Guest review byian - 10.0
Well worth the ferry ride and then some!
Well worth the ferry ride and then some! Between Stromness and Kirkwall, neolithic and medieval ruins, beautiful scenery, the creative trail, educational opportunities, shops and cafes and restaurants and bars, there is so much to see on the Orkney Islands -- we just barely scratched the surface. We didn't even get off the main island, much to my regret. Seriously: However much time you're planning to spend here, double it, then triple that. It still won't be enough.Guest review byKathrynUnited States - 10.0

Our favourite places in Toab were the lovely sandy beaches which had an abundance of wildlife and flowers. We chose to eat at Sheila Fleet's Kirk cafe which had a choice of interesting dishes, but most importantly for us - a delicious vegan dish which we loved. The roads in Toab are easy to get around on and around every corner there are gorgeous views, little stone Orkney houses and fields of inquisitive cows! The wide open views of sea and sky are breathtaking, as are the gorgeous blues and turquoise colours that flood your senses.Guest review byChristinaUnited Kingdom - 10.0
The location is in mainland Orkney.
The location is in mainland Orkney. It is situated between Kirkwall and Stromness and not far from any of the tourist sites. It's a short drive to the Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar and nature reserve. It's not a long drive to the Churchill Barriers and the Italian Chapel. The only downside is if you want to eat out at night you have to either go to Kirkwall or Stromness to find it. We ate at the Kirkwall Hotel and the food was very good, the service excellent and fast. For nature/bird lovers, it isn't far from the Hobbister reserve, nor is it far to go to get to the Loons reserve. The reserve at the Birsay moor hide is a little further but worth it to see Red Throated Divers and chicks. The Earls Bu and Orphir round church are well worth a visit. St Magnus Cathedral is free. Everything is in reasonable distance, a trip to Deerness to see the Gloup is amazing. And the wartime history from both world wars is all around the island.Guest review byamandaUnited Kingdom
