Breakfast was great. Location was coinvent to shopping and local restaurants. Parking was a little hard. Public car park nearby, but had to get free ticket every hour till 5PM, then free all night. Out the next morning. Small town and able to get our clothes washed in a nearby laundromat.

During my recent visit to Orkney, I had the pleasure of staying at the Kirkwall Hotel. This historic property exceeded expectations on all fronts. Exceptional Staff: The staff at the Kirkwall Hotel were incredibly professional and supportive. Their attentiveness and willingness to go the extra mile made my stay truly memorable. From assisting with taxi arrangements to facilitating an extended stay due to a missed flight, their genuine hospitality was exceptional. Unmatched Location: The hotel's location is unbeatable. Situated in the heart of Kirkwall, it provides convenient access to a variety of amenities. Lidl, Tesco, restaurants, souvenir shops, and the magnificent Magnus Cathedral are all within easy walking distance. Historic Charm: The Kirkwall Hotel itself is a treasure trove of history. The corridors are adorned with captivating historic pictures, offering a glimpse into the past. A particularly delightful surprise was the beautifully preserved guest register dating back to 1948, adding a unique touch to the ambiance. Peaceful and Inviting: My room was impeccably clean and offered a serene atmosphere, free from any disruptive noise. The view of the harbor was an added bonus, providing a picturesque backdrop to my stay. Highly Recommended: The Kirkwall Hotel offers an exceptional combination of comfort, history, and exceptional service. Whether you're a business traveler or a leisure guest, this hotel caters to a truly enjoyable stay. I would highly recommend the Kirkwall Hotel to anyone visiting Orkney. In fact, I look forward to returning myself in the future.

Our visit to the Orkneys on our adventure through Scotland wasn't planned, but with a last minute booking we were lucky enough to be able to spend a couple nights at the wonderful Orkney Hotel! This historic inn far exceeded our expectations. We particularly loved spending the evenings in the bar tasting some of the literal thousands of bottles of whiskey decorating the walls. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the Scottish breakfast was delicious. I would highly recommend a stay at the Orkney Hotel on your next visit!

I’ve been visiting Orkney regularly for almost 20 years, helping at the Ness of Brodgar dig. If you like archeology, Orkney is a must-visit destination. There is so much to see, from the Neolithic to the vikings and beyond. A wonderful place.

The people are friendly, helpful and accommodating.

The people are friendly, helpful and accommodating. A lovely area to walk, take photographs and watch birds. Fantastic archaeology - everywhere, but I was the most impressed with Maesehow. You need to book a tour ahead to visit, and the archaeologist's talk was excellent There are regular buses to Kirkwall passing near the Ness of Brodgar. Ferries to Hoy and the Mainland There is a late opening Co-op with easy parking. Pack good waterproofs and a woolly hat - even in summer, it is windy. Beware 2 flight UK journeys to Kirkwall with short transfer times between. My first flight ran a bit late and my suitcase didn't arrive at Kirkwall until the next day. It seems this is far from unusual, so pack accordingly just in case.

I liked that it was a traditional guest house....no frills just a comfortable and very clean room with a fantastic breakfast. Dounby is near to some major archaeological sites which are all well signposted. Stromness is not far from Dounby and is where the Ferry from Scrabster arrived and departs. Stromness is a beautiful wee town - I much preferred it to Kirkwall. For any visitor I would advice getting a good map and reading up a bit before you decide where you want to visit, depending on your interests. Also....just drive around and you'll find places .....nowhere is very far to drive and you'll come across interesting vistas and great craft shops everywhere.

Lovely and quiet village with all the essentials but lacking evening meal options during the week. However Kirkwall is only 6 miles away with restaurants, takeaways and larger shops. Stenness and Brodgar are on the doorstep so really handy for early morning or late evening visits as alternative to the busier times. A great base from which to visit all of the sites of the North and West coasts. There is a good walk up the hill behind the village that takes in some modern stone pillars and a much older, more interesting Neolithic cairn. It's also possible to follow the marked St Magnus trail over the brow to get a view not only over Finstown but to the coast on the other since of the hill.

A Lovely village.

A Lovely village. The public garden is very well maintained and tranquil for a walk round or relaxing sit down. There is a very good Gallery and Craft shop and the staff are very pleasant plus one of the artists works from the shop. The Murray Arms has an exceptional seafood platter and plenty other fresh options. The museum was closed while we were there but looked as though it would be interesting. Robertsons is a Bar and café with good coffee and a fairly standard menu for lunch and dinner with inside and outside seating. The local shop is very well supplied and has good local cheese and fish as well as fresh produce and a wide selection of food and non food goods. Walks along the shoreline are possible but there's no beach so a bit rocky underfoot. It didn't look like a good wild swim location but there are plenty of these at the beach areas close by. Plus there's the ferry back to Gills Bay on the main land.

The drive from the ferry was easy and we enjoyed the Churchill Barriers. Easy walking distance to The Sands Hotel and good food. We didn't find much else in Burray but we took the car to other islands anyway. Brough of Birsay and Skaill Beach well worth a visit.

Upsides to choosing Orphir

Upsides to choosing Orphir - attractive scenery along Scapa Flow and to hillsides on Hoy and Mainland, - very rural and quiet. Lots of birdlife in the fields and along the shorelines. - only about 15 minutes on good roads to both Kirkwall and Stromness for shopping, restaurants and other urban facilities. - very close to major tourist sites in Stenness and to the Hoy Ferry. - Easy access on good roads to tourist sites elsewhere on Mainland, including RSPB sites, Neolithic and Viking relics, cliffwalks and hillwalks, and ferries to other islands, Downsides to choosing Orphir - Orphir itself seems to have almost no shopping or restaurants, so need to plan for these. - limited public transport so really have to have own vehicle if staying there.

Our favourite places in Toab were the lovely sandy beaches which had an abundance of wildlife and flowers. We chose to eat at Sheila Fleet's Kirk cafe which had a choice of interesting dishes, but most importantly for us - a delicious vegan dish which we loved. The roads in Toab are easy to get around on and around every corner there are gorgeous views, little stone Orkney houses and fields of inquisitive cows! The wide open views of sea and sky are breathtaking, as are the gorgeous blues and turquoise colours that flood your senses.
