Located in Stromness, The Old Smokery provides sea views and free WiFi, 7 miles from Standing Stones of Stenness and 8 miles from Ring of Brogdar. We stayed at the apartment on the ground floor at The Old Smokery, and it was the perfect place for us! We enjoyed the rural and quiet location outside the city of Stromness. The apartment is new and really lovely with everything you need in a "home away from home", and Fiona and Callum were great hosts with lots of helpful tips on things to explore on the Orkneys. As this was a bicycle holiday, we went biking around the island, and both Skara Brae and Ring of Brodgar are less than a 15 km bike ride away.
Located in Stromness, 5 miles from Standing Stones of Stenness and 6 miles from Ring of Brogdar, Harbour Cottage provides accommodations with amenities such as free WiFi and a flat-screen TV. Lovely, cozy cottage looking over the ferry terminal in Stromness. After four weeks on the road, we loved having a very fully equipped kitchen where we could cook food purchased from the grocery about a block away. We took advantage of the washer and drying rack to winnow down the clothes we brought to Orkney for our 4 day trip, and the machine worked beautifully. From the day before we arrived, our host David made himself available for any questions, problems or concerns. While we never met him in person, our questions were supported through quickly responded emails. We greatly appreciated how comfortable this apartment was for us. We spent our days out visiting sites around the islands and welcomed the comfortable recliner sofas and Netflix equipped television with which to relax in the evenings. This apartment was instrumental to how much we liked our first Orkney visit!
124-In The Heart of Stromness in Stromness provides accommodations with free WiFi, 5 miles from Standing Stones of Stenness, 6 miles from Ring of Brogdar and 6 miles from Ness of Brogdar. Very spacious apartment. The kitchen is on the ground floor with the living space and 2 bedrooms upstairs.
Located in Stromness, Burnside Farm Bed and Breakfast offers accommodations with free WiFi and TV, as well as a garden and a shared lounge. It was easy to get to and the host was very accommodating. She provided us with information on where to eat and how to get to the various sites we wanted to visit.
The Ferry Inn offers 30 rooms spread across four buildings in Stromness, and is located 6 miles from the UNESCO Neolithic Heart of Orkney. Fantastic suite with upstairs and downstairs beds, a bathtub, everything clean and gleaming new. Super helpful staff who bent over backwards to let us check in early. Good restaurant.
Lovely little seaside town. Very friendly locals. Love the accent. Super far away from everything, very peaceful and quiet. Super fun driving on the tiny little roads with hardly any other cars around. So many amazing archaeological sites nearby in such a small area!
Tiny town, but huge on charm and beauty. Stromness is right on the water, and has both a ferry terminal, and some areas where large cruise ships can come in for the day. It is a beautiful town with a curved main street that leads along unimaginably clear water. Though there aren't many eating places, those that are there have good quality and food. For folks who bring along a car, there is ample free long-term parking across from the ferry terminal. For those without a car, the Travel Centre is the location for both island transportation and for tourist sites. If you go to Stromness, be sure to visit the Stromness Museum which had its beginnings in 1812, and has been standing in its current location since 1862. There's lots of good information there, and you can spend days looking through all the old journals, family name books, etc.
I have never been in a place that seemed simultaneously timeless and yet completely immersed in deep time -- from the Neolithic sites to the Viking structures to the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century homes occupied throughout the town. Completely peaceful, yet full of life and energy.
Stromness is a great hub for exploring mainland Orkney. We were interested in the historic sites - and there are plenty. For anyone interested in Neolithic sites, this is a treasure trove. A car is almost a must to get around to the various sites. Don't miss the St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall. It is wonderful. We ate at Helgi's in Kirkwall - delicious. Also, out at the Tomb of the Otter- right by tomb of the Eagles, there is a small bistro with excellent food. Also take the tour at the Tomb of the Otters .
It is quaint, directly on the water. There are a number of interesting shops including a good deal of handcrafted items and art. They do close early. The draw to the are however are the prehistoric sights all very close.
The most charming town I have ever seen! Very authentic. (Of course, we were there off season, so summer may be different.) Loved the narrow stone streets. Had the fortunate opportunity to be there on Remembrance Day and were treated to bagpipes and a parade. Great walking trail outside of Stromness along the cliffs--go at sunset!
