Set in Kirkwall, Orkney, family-run Ayre Hotel & Ayre Apartments overlooks Kirkwall harbor. It offers local produce in its restaurant and traditionally styled rooms, with free Wi-Fi. Great location. Very modern 2BR apartment, terrific for families or two couples. Apparently has gotten too much use since it was built given the pandemic and felt brand new.

Located just 13 minutes’ from St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall Youth Hostel offers free onsite parking and a self-catering kitchen. This was a very positive first time hosteling experience for a 77 yr young grandma and her 18 yr old grandson. The hosts at the Hostel, especially Chris and Kelvin, were very helpful. The Hostel was very well organized and run ad clean. The guests were friendly.
Interesting variety of shops and places of historical interest to visit. Places to eat or have a coffee/cake on the main street. People were very friendly and helpful at the information and travel centre. Harbour and ferry terminal with a marina. Weather was warm and sunny but can be changeable. Everything within walking distance but a car would be preferable if historic sites out with the town are on your agenda. Buses run regularly between the main towns but not to more rural locations.
Our only disappointment was the weather that weekend we were there. Forty knot winds and rain. Also Sunday most places close very early and bus service is sporadic. If we had had a rental car, it would have been far more enjoyable. As such what we were able to do was quite impressive. We had our best food experience at the Archive (Old Library) an entree called "The Royale".
We used Kirkwall as a base to visit wildlife and archeological sights around the island using a hired car. The scenery was fantastic. The weather was cold for the time of year. There are plenty of good restaurants in Kirkwall.
Orkney is a fabulous place. There is so much to see and do and although we were there for 1 week we didn't even manage to visit any of the other islands - there is so much to do in Kirkwall and the rest of Mainland,
I liked KIrkwall because of its history. We enjoyed the Kirkwall Museum which was much bigger than it looked from the outside and had lots of information and artifacts and items relating to it's history for many centuries. We also enjoyed visiting St Magnus' Cathedral. Getting around the centre of Kirkwall is easy on foot, However if you want to go further you need transport. Buses appear not to be too regular.
The cathedral is at the heart of the town with a museum and other historic buildings adjacent. Main street is pedestrianised with easy parking at numerous central sites, generally free. Most restaurants require booking as it gets busy particularly at weekends. Ideally need a car to explore Orkney mainland eg to Stromness. Ferries at reasonable price go to other islands.

Orcades Hostel is located right by the Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall. It's a few minutes' walk to the large supermarkets and to the main leisure walking path in town. About a ~15 min walk to get to the main bus station and town centre. The hostel has a lovely garden area which we used for cooking on our camping stove. The owners were very friendly and helpful, and have done a great job of arranging the hostel in a Covid-safe manner. We had our own room which was a great value for money compared to the hotels in Kirkwall.
Kirkwall
This should set the standard for a booking.com apartment. It was just perfect and everything up to standard. The kitchen had all the amenities a family needs. The bedrooms were cosy and the upper floor helps you taste the life in a traditional Scottish home. Everything was so clean. The owners and their family enrich the experience as they helped us feel at home. Thank you so much for your hospitality - you made our stay at Kirkwall extra special
Kirkwall
location and ease of parking … Kirkwall itself was a really good centre where it was very pleasant to just explore and enjoy the friendly holiday atmosphere. The apartment was very well appointed and tastefully laid out and furnished and we liked the little food treats awaiting us on our arrival. We enjoyed the whole Orkney experience.

we loved everything about our stay at Ardconnel B&B and we wouldn’t hesitate to stay again or recommend to friends and family. while a little out of the main streets of Kirkwall, it was a pleasant walk or short taxi /car ride. the rooms were well equipped, nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. breakfast was excellent!

We were staying here while visiting parents and family. The house was spotlessly clean with a well equipped kitchen. The beds were very comfortable. It is very close to the centre of Kirkwall. There was a lovely gift of local produce on arrival. Can't fault this place. Evelyn popped by to make sure everything was okay.
Kirkwall
The accommodation was very well supplied with kitchen goods and visitor information. It was spotlessly clean, very cosy and very well located for all the Kirkwall sights. Vanda met us at the door and was very helpful with recommendations for things to do and places to eat.
Kirkwall
Staggering distance from Highland Park distillery. A warm welcome, clean and an interesting property with architecture, books and musical interest. Peaceful, and a modest walk into Kirkwall. A great breakfast, delightfully presented. Everything but the girl. Hey ho.
There were 3 of us - one thought the bed was comfortable, the other two thought the beds were way too hard. It is “not possibly noisy” in the back rooms it is extremely noisy. The stay would have been better if we had wanted to be a part of the party at the St Ola.
Great location for hotel, good car parking close to entrances. We enjoyed a lovely meal on 2nd evening. The hotel is close to centre of Kirkwall and a good base for travelling round Orkney. The bedroom was at the back so there was very little noisy background.
I ended up staying at Kirkwall hotel which is run by the same management. Everything was superb. Recently decorated, comfy large beds, touch or Orkney with the coffee in the room, great selection of drinks at the bar.
Comfortable room for the night, parking was easy in the lot. The restaurant was good, and staff were very friendly. I wish I'd stayed on Orkney more than just one night, but was pleased with the accommodation.

Great location, spacious apartment with high ceilings and period features. Easy to pop out into Kirkwall for the shops and local attractions. Near the ferry terminal for a day trip to the outer isles.
