The City of Popes
Located in Southern France, Avignon is the largest capital of the department of Vaucluse. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the charming city center is home to the palace of the popes, Rocher des Doms, and the bridge of Avignon.
The historic Palais des Papes is one of the most significant medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Right on the square of the same name, the Papal Palace is an important tourist attraction where you can see the pope’s private chambers and frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti.
Le Pont d’Avignon was built in the Middle Ages and, according to the legend, a young shepherd called Benezet was inspired by angels to build the bridge. The children’s song "Sur Le Pont D'Avignon" is now famous all over the world.
The beautiful gardens of Rocher des Doms are ideal for a promenade or picnic. Featuring a large pond, swans, ducks and lush vegetation, this place is perfect for relaxing moments. From the top, you can enjoy the views of the Rhône.

We visited in July during the French Theater festival. It was a little too busy for our liking, but if you like French theater, it's a great time to be there. We took a tour of the Pope's palace, which is amazing and well worth visiting. We also did a half day tour of the lavender fields, which are about an hour away. The centre of Avignon is compact with a good mix of shops and restaurants. Excellent transport links to nearby towns, eg, Villeneuve sur Avignon, Arles and Nimes. We enjoyed a tour to the Camargue to see the pink flamingos, which was fab. The little tourist train was good as a quick way to get an overview of the town. I would not recommend the hop on hop off bus though as it can’t get through the small streets and we spent a lot of time at traffic lights. The palais des papes is excellent.
