Haiku was quiet, peaceful, much more local feel; The total opposite feel of Kaanapali, which is much busier and more touristy. [We stayed in both areas during our trip.] Near Haiku there are local thrift shops, weekly markets (Swap Meet), and you are surrounded by nature. The weather was fine too. It is also a little closer to the Haleakala summit than most of the resort areas.
