I have lived in Honolulu before so I may be a bit partial. It is a great place for a vacation, if you want to spend the cash. The cost of flying in from most locations is not bad but the hotel stays and food costs are what will get you. It is a relatively safe location, if you stick to downtown, and there are plenty of things to do mostly because the weather is always awesome. I would recommend getting off the beaten path and heading to the farmers markets on the weekends. the swap meet at the Aloha bowl is okay but the farmers market near the college campus is better, albeit smaller. Transportation is a bit spendy although Uber has moved in and is doing well, the cabs are a little bit expensive. there are some must sees in my opinion such as the Arizona and Missouri. If you like it outdoors then hit Diamond Head for an easy hike that is fun and refreshing. the people have always been friendly to me and the malls are big enough to keep you busy for a bit. What is Hawaii without the beaches. each side of the island hosts different types of beaches so explore a little and don't just hang out in Waikiki.
Over past few years we've holidayed regularly in Waikiki. This time we were returning home from a couple of Caribbean cruises (inc.Cuba) so took the opportunity to stopover in Hawaii so as to finally visit 'Shangri-la' ( Islamic Gallery/Museum- established by the late Doris Duke, just below and beyond Diamond Head).Well worth it!! Tours can only be booked through Honolulu Museum of Art which also allows free entry on the day of your tour.If you haven't yet climbed Diamond Head do it after touring 'Shangri-la' so that you'll know where to look down on it from above; a beautiful estate right on the beach,
Honolulu is really my home so I love it. I worry about so many homeless and wonder why so many are indigenous people. No place beats Hawaii for its aloha spirit.
I stayed at Hawaii Islands for 6 days and visited Big Island and Oahu. Both the islands are very different from each other. The Big island is famous for volcanoes and it was a real sight to see it in action. There are multiple places to visit on the Big Island and every one of them is equally good. I stayed on a hotel in Kona neighborhood and it was very close by shopping places and eateries. In Oahu, I stayed in the downtown Waikiki area and the hotel was close to every major attraction. I visited Diamond head, North Shore, Polynesian Cultural Center, Dole Plantation, Byodo In temple, King Kamehameha Statue, ʻIolani Palace, Hanauma Bay and many more. I used Uber and local buses to travel around and it was very easy to navigate around in the local buses.
Most perturbed by USA Mainland policy of giving one way tickets to homeless persons to Hawaii. Vagrants everywhere unlike 5 years ago. Makes one afraid to sit on public benches. A problem is not solved by transferring it to another state to become some one else's burden. I felt sorry for the deterioriation of the once beautiful and clean Wakiki, as there were homeless persons resident on beaches, bus sheds, benches, picnic tables and public discourses. Shame on mighty America for failing to provide a mandatory Homeless Person rehabitation and reintegration program.
Lots to do if you like a busy city on the pacific. Be sure to go to Iolani Palace and to Kawaiaho Church to get some Hawaiian history. But go to North shore when tired of city.
The location of the hotel was close to swimming areas for kids. Mall with food, shops and movies are all close by. Hawaiian Style Cafe was the best for eating breakfast!!! Don’t forget your chocolate at Big Island Candies!
Second visit to Princeville....this time for a wedding...Same experience as last visit...Terrible weather, roosters making noise all night long, limited dining options....although beautiful views everywhere, many better places to visit in Hawaii....
Honolulu was nice but it is very crowded. It was good to go up to the north shore and get away from Waikiki. The Polynesian Cultural Center is a must visit for anyone coming to Hawaii for the first time.
I was visit 4 island out of 8 on my cruise trip around Hawaii. I stay 2 nights before and 2 nights after in Waikiki beach area: first two nights in - Hyatt, then 2 nights in Aston hotel on beach. Honolulu is big city with a lot of homeless around. And a lots of tourists on a beach of Waikiki. All beaches area belongs to the public, even if you stay in exepensive hotels, they don’t have designated areas for the guises. It’s hard to fine spots under the shade. But if you travel a little bit further out of center, you can fine a very nice place to swim. The same concept with food, the further from center the better deal: cheaper, bigger and better. Public transportation is great. I took a bus to Pearl Harbor for a $5,50 around trip from Waikiki area. Practically, you can get to all locations, very convenient. Uber is much cheaper than taxi, very reliable, trip from Waikiki beach hotel to port cost $17. Shuttle is practical too: to hotel from airport, cost $16 each way. Hawaii is most beautiful place in earth. The tru Hawaiian people is very sperutial, love the land they are leaving on and cherished every single stone on it. Hawaii has everything on earth: beautiful, year around warm ocean; Incredible waterfall; volcanic craters, erupted volcanic, lava; breath taking views of shore lines; canyons; even snow in mountains. It’s like Great Canyon, Yellowstone Park, road between LA and SF, Amalfy cost of Italy and beauty of Greece all together. It’s paradise!!! It’s best vacation so far.
This hotel was amazing. It has the best view in the city of Diamond Head. It is steps from the beach, has a lovely restaurant and pool and a modern, feel-good lobby area. We loved the free yoga class and lei making workshop. We did both twice! The staff were all helpful and friendly and a lovely older gentleman at the valet thanked us for our loyalty, as we had stayed at the hotel twice that month (at the start and end of our Hawaii tour). The hotel was definitely as good as the other big names in the area, but at a much more affordable price.
The hotel is very peaceful and stylish and we had an amazing ocean and city view. Room was cleaned daily and the staff has been very attentive and helpful at all times. Breakfast was great and there were different options every day (ignore negative reviews about the lack of cheese and yogurt, because ofcourse that’s not something that Hawaiians eat). The location of the hotel is perfect as it’s one block away from Waikikii beach and next to all the good restaurants and convenience stores. We will definitely be coming back again.
Waikiki, Honolulu
This is hands down the nicest hotel in Waikiki/Honolulu - others simply do not compare for the luxury experience. The size of even the smallest rooms is ample, with a luxury bathroom and super comfortable beds, sitting area, and balcony. The drinks at the pool bar and the breakfasts and views, as well as the public spaces, and the beautiful pool itself, are all unbeatable. This is a great place to escape screaming children and crowds and have a civilized, elegant Hawaiian vacation without traveling to an outer island.
BEAUTIFUL!!! Exactly what I would expect from a Hawaii hotel for my first time visiting. It's NOT a resort hotel, but the attached restaurant is great and the location for the price is perfect! Very close to all the shopping and the beach. And across the street are a couple amazing food trucks. One with fresh and unique donuts. The hotel was clean, friendly and they have a valet that made sure my rental was taken care of and ready when I needed it. We loved it so much, we extended an extra night!
First of all, the hotel staff is exceptional. They make the stay so very pleasant and are the real reason, along with the location, that I stay here every year for an annual convention. The hotel has been refreshed with the Hawaii style is lovely. The rooms are comfy with great beds. I love the full size Keurig machines in the rooms with plentiful k-cups. About a 6 minute walk to the convention center and 3 minutes to the Ala Moana Shopping Mall. Nearby to food, transport, beach, and post office.
This is an older well kept hotel with a Hawaii vibe. Hotel prices in Kauai are high. We spent almost the same amount for nicer hotels on the other islands. Location is good, staff very nice and helpful. Parking is good. Coffee is GREAT! We stayed 4 days instead of 2 because our plans changed. If you're on a tight budget, this hotel fits the bill. Restaurants within walking distance. My special needs son loved the cat Mango and of course chickens/roosters thru-out Hawaii.
Waikiki, Honolulu
Best location in Waikiki Beach (you can walk right into the beach). The Royal Hawaiian provides a very luxurious experience in a beautiful historic building surrounded by all the entertainment you can imagine in Waikiki. The staff was beyond helpful and friendly; they truly cared about us and making sure that we were satisfied with our stay. Other perks are that the Mai Tai Bar has pretty good food, and you can use the shared pool and hot tub at the Sheraton next door.
Pahoa
Location: So close to beach, hilo and vulcano national park Free Parking nearby Super spacious room with comfortable double bed Very friendly owner Least expensive private room on the whole island, maybe even in whole of state hawaii Kitchen fully equipped, Restrooms nice Nice sitting area outside, and hanging around makes fun too, super quiet to sleep. My favorite Hostel from now on, i would call the whole area with private rooms more like HOTEL instead of HOSTEL
Being in Waikiki, the location was fantastic. It's the main hub for tourists so there was plenty of nightlife and it was nearby several beaches (less than a 10min walk away). Groceries were also readily available nearby, although the prices in Hawaii are insane so we found that it was actually cheaper to eat out! The room was stocked with most kitchen amenities (dinnerware, oven/hob, microwave, fridge etc) and even had an ironing board.
Great location. We only had a brief stopover in Hawaii and the hotel's proximity to the airport meant we could have maximum sleep. Excellent airport pick up service. We didn't have US sim cards, so the concierge directed us to a landline which connected directly to the hotel. After ringing, the shuttle picked us up promptly. Friendly, helpful staff. Despite many guests arriving simultaneously, the staff were helpful and efficient.
Waikiki, Honolulu
The views of tha Ala Wai, University of Hawaii, Diamond Head, etc were excellent. The condo was beautiful and included a lot of things you wouldn't think of bringing, which was nice. Shenae was great and quick to respond to questions. The location at the beginning of Waikiki was good because you didn't have to drive down busy roads. The value you get is unmatched.
The Restaurant was fantastic. We loved the hipster vibe of the entire hotel. Just a few blocks walk to the luxury shopping strip and closer to Waikiki beach than we expected. This is a dog hotel which we did not realise on booking. They have strict dog rules and there were no problems at all. The coffee shop had fantastic esspresso coffee which is hard to find in Hawaii.
Accommodation in Waikiki (and all Hawaii) is super expensive, so nowhere is cheap. But, compared with other hotels this place represented good value. Staff were awesome, location was great. The pool and bar area were really nice and relaxing - an oasis with palm trees to retreat to from the Waikiki traffic and noise.
Waikiki, Honolulu
Well situated and great to be in an iconic hotel in Hawaii. The staff were friendly and helpful and even gave us some bubbly to help celebrate our anniversary. Of all the places we stayed during our stay in Hawaii, especially on Oahu, this felt like we were in Hawaii. Loved the ice-bream, nachos and water vouchers.
I've stayed at this hotel for years. I'd estimate at least 10-12 times and always thought that while it didn't really merit the 5-star rating it carried with some services (Hawaii Prince, Halekalani, others are much better), that if you got the right price, it was a really great hotel. That was then...
Lahaina
The staff was very wonderful...they were very personaland made us feel at home...Angie was exceptional and very helpful in assuring my visit to Hawaii was one to remember... This Hotel is under rated and should be considered a 5star...I will return in August and will return to this Hotel
Wonderful view of the ocean, diamond head and zoo gardens. Best end of waikiki to get real hawaiian ambience rather than just crowded hotels, shops and tourists. Area is great for all kinds of beach activities and swimming. Very comfortable bed. Excellent japanese restaurant.
By far our absolute favorite thing about staying at the Hilo Hawaiian is the VIEW!!! We love the view of the Bay, of the coast line, and especially Mauna Kea! We were very grateful how the Hotel accommodated our requests to have a room with an unobstructed view.
Waikiki, Honolulu
Excellent location in the center of Waikiki. You can walk to the beach through the famous Royal Hawaiian Hotel. It has a convenience store inside the hotel. The staff are excellent. They were very friendly and polite everyday. I think this hotel excellent value.
An older style hotel with a true Hawaiian feel. Open space lobby. Room was clean and bed comfortable. Rooms were serviced regularly. The swimming pool is just what you needed after a busy day at the shops. Closeness to the beach is a convenience.
