I have lived in Honolulu before so I may be a bit partial. It is a great place for a vacation, if you want to spend the cash. The cost of flying in from most locations is not bad but the hotel stays and food costs are what will get you. It is a relatively safe location, if you stick to downtown, and there are plenty of things to do mostly because the weather is always awesome. I would recommend getting off the beaten path and heading to the farmers markets on the weekends. the swap meet at the Aloha bowl is okay but the farmers market near the college campus is better, albeit smaller. Transportation is a bit spendy although Uber has moved in and is doing well, the cabs are a little bit expensive. there are some must sees in my opinion such as the Arizona and Missouri. If you like it outdoors then hit Diamond Head for an easy hike that is fun and refreshing. the people have always been friendly to me and the malls are big enough to keep you busy for a bit. What is Hawaii without the beaches. each side of the island hosts different types of beaches so explore a little and don't just hang out in Waikiki.
Over past few years we've holidayed regularly in Waikiki. This time we were returning home from a couple of Caribbean cruises (inc.Cuba) so took the opportunity to stopover in Hawaii so as to finally visit 'Shangri-la' ( Islamic Gallery/Museum- established by the late Doris Duke, just below and beyond Diamond Head).Well worth it!! Tours can only be booked through Honolulu Museum of Art which also allows free entry on the day of your tour.If you haven't yet climbed Diamond Head do it after touring 'Shangri-la' so that you'll know where to look down on it from above; a beautiful estate right on the beach,
Honolulu is really my home so I love it. I worry about so many homeless and wonder why so many are indigenous people. No place beats Hawaii for its aloha spirit.
I stayed at Hawaii Islands for 6 days and visited Big Island and Oahu. Both the islands are very different from each other. The Big island is famous for volcanoes and it was a real sight to see it in action. There are multiple places to visit on the Big Island and every one of them is equally good. I stayed on a hotel in Kona neighborhood and it was very close by shopping places and eateries. In Oahu, I stayed in the downtown Waikiki area and the hotel was close to every major attraction. I visited Diamond head, North Shore, Polynesian Cultural Center, Dole Plantation, Byodo In temple, King Kamehameha Statue, ʻIolani Palace, Hanauma Bay and many more. I used Uber and local buses to travel around and it was very easy to navigate around in the local buses.
Most perturbed by USA Mainland policy of giving one way tickets to homeless persons to Hawaii. Vagrants everywhere unlike 5 years ago. Makes one afraid to sit on public benches. A problem is not solved by transferring it to another state to become some one else's burden. I felt sorry for the deterioriation of the once beautiful and clean Wakiki, as there were homeless persons resident on beaches, bus sheds, benches, picnic tables and public discourses. Shame on mighty America for failing to provide a mandatory Homeless Person rehabitation and reintegration program.
Lots to do if you like a busy city on the pacific. Be sure to go to Iolani Palace and to Kawaiaho Church to get some Hawaiian history. But go to North shore when tired of city.
The location of the hotel was close to swimming areas for kids. Mall with food, shops and movies are all close by. Hawaiian Style Cafe was the best for eating breakfast!!! Don’t forget your chocolate at Big Island Candies!
Second visit to Princeville....this time for a wedding...Same experience as last visit...Terrible weather, roosters making noise all night long, limited dining options....although beautiful views everywhere, many better places to visit in Hawaii....
Honolulu was nice but it is very crowded. It was good to go up to the north shore and get away from Waikiki. The Polynesian Cultural Center is a must visit for anyone coming to Hawaii for the first time.
I was visit 4 island out of 8 on my cruise trip around Hawaii. I stay 2 nights before and 2 nights after in Waikiki beach area: first two nights in - Hyatt, then 2 nights in Aston hotel on beach. Honolulu is big city with a lot of homeless around. And a lots of tourists on a beach of Waikiki. All beaches area belongs to the public, even if you stay in exepensive hotels, they don’t have designated areas for the guises. It’s hard to fine spots under the shade. But if you travel a little bit further out of center, you can fine a very nice place to swim. The same concept with food, the further from center the better deal: cheaper, bigger and better. Public transportation is great. I took a bus to Pearl Harbor for a $5,50 around trip from Waikiki area. Practically, you can get to all locations, very convenient. Uber is much cheaper than taxi, very reliable, trip from Waikiki beach hotel to port cost $17. Shuttle is practical too: to hotel from airport, cost $16 each way. Hawaii is most beautiful place in earth. The tru Hawaiian people is very sperutial, love the land they are leaving on and cherished every single stone on it. Hawaii has everything on earth: beautiful, year around warm ocean; Incredible waterfall; volcanic craters, erupted volcanic, lava; breath taking views of shore lines; canyons; even snow in mountains. It’s like Great Canyon, Yellowstone Park, road between LA and SF, Amalfy cost of Italy and beauty of Greece all together. It’s paradise!!! It’s best vacation so far.
This is an older well kept hotel with a Hawaii vibe. Hotel prices in Kauai are high. We spent almost the same amount for nicer hotels on the other islands. Location is good, staff very nice and helpful. Parking is good. Coffee is GREAT! We stayed 4 days instead of 2 because our plans changed. If you're on a tight budget, this hotel fits the bill. Restaurants within walking distance. My special needs son loved the cat Mango and of course chickens/roosters thru-out Hawaii.
The hotel is in an excellent, walkable location, which is right across from the beach. It's also located on Kalakaua Ave., which is basically the Waikiki "strip," so this allows you to pretty much walk to all of the touristy places like The International Marketplace, Moana Surfrider, The Royal Hawaiian Center, and The Hilton Waikiki Village to name a few. Overall the stay was very comfortable and pleasant with decent views of the ocean (partial views).
Pahoa
Location: So close to beach, hilo and vulcano national park Free Parking nearby Super spacious room with comfortable double bed Very friendly owner Least expensive private room on the whole island, maybe even in whole of state hawaii Kitchen fully equipped, Restrooms nice Nice sitting area outside, and hanging around makes fun too, super quiet to sleep. My favorite Hostel from now on, i would call the whole area with private rooms more like HOTEL instead of HOSTEL
For the high prices that you need to pay for a night at Waikiki, this hotel definitely stood up. With a restaurant full of different options, a Bar with Happy Hour and a Pool with another bar, this hotel was great. After being greeted with a courtesy Sake bomb cocktail, you get to a super comfortable room with an amazing bed and shower. Even though we only spent one night there (our last at Hawaii) we didn't want to leave the hotel!
Kailua-Kona
Loved this place. Hosts were very polite and nice, views were fantastic, and exactly what we needed. My wife and I accidentally booked our original hotel a night short than when our flight was so we needed a place to stay for the evening to shower and rest. This place is well worth the cost and with a beautiful living room view of the coat. If we are ever back in Hawaii we will definitely drop in here again.

The vibe you find at Open Gate Hostel is hard to explain and find somewhere else. Staying here was one of the best decisions I have made throughout my two weeks in Hawaii. Staff is truly super (helpful, friendly, welcoming, helpful) and the people you meet there are just amazing. My private room was large, comfortable, and clean. Bathrooms and kitchen were very clean, too. Location is incredible.
Traditional Hawaiian charm that is sadly lacking in so many modern hotels in Waikiki nowadays. In a prime location, with spacious airy rooms and welcoming lobby area. Beautiful smell everytime you stepped in the hotel. Excellent free activities such as lei making and ukulele lessons. Simple but nice breakfast included. Housekeeping staff were fantastic as were the reception and breakfast team.
We spent a week in the apartment, and it truly felt like our home away from home! The place is equipped with everything you could possibly need, including a fully stocked kitchen, washer and dryer, and all the beach essentials. The apartment's decor surrounds you with a charming Hawaiian ambiance. Our experience was perfect, and saying goodbye was tough. Wholehearted recommendation!
Good location, beach in front is not a great beach for swimming as it is often brown, but not far to other beaches. Staff is excellent and hotel is clean. Room is not bad, but could use some TLC. Bed is comfortable and you don't come to Hawaii to sit in a hotel. With that being said I believe the hotel is a little overpriced, but it is Hawaii and everything is overpriced.
Exceptional price for location and peaceful hotel. Beautiful room with balcony and ocean view. It was nice to walk over to the sister hotel, The Halekulani, and be able to use our room charge for food and services there. Every night live music. Around the corner walk to couture shopping, ABC store, The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Waikiki surfing, restaurants (Duke's and Noi).
We have been staying for three weeks on Hawaii and among the places we stayed, this was clearly the best. Reasonable price, large and clean room. We stayed in the 2BR apartment and everything was provided, even small salt and pepper shaker, dishwasher and washer detergents (which was not always the case in other properties). We are more than happy to come again.
Location is very good. not far from Beach. room is ok, Hawaii is really expensive. it is in the center of all food and waikiki beach. With the bus you can go from the airport for 3 dollars cash there in 50 mins. Easy. I like the service of beach towels. Free water, tee, coffee is there. Room is fine and spacious. also the bad. 24h reception is good.
Kahana
This place was absolutely amazing. The room welcomed us with a Hawaiian music when we entered and then we proceeded to the balcony which provided us with the most stunning ocean view. I just wanted to sit in the balcony and watch the ocean for the rest of our holiday. This was definitely the greatest apartment we ever stayed in.
Waikiki, Honolulu
The room was clean and a fresh atmosphere. The smoke detector went off during the day for no reason. The hotel staff weren't aware it was going off, but they got someone in immediately to fix the fault. Was very happy about that. We would stay here again, should we go to Waikiki/ Hawaii again. Fabulous location too.
Hotel is great. Maintains a bit of that "old Hawaiian" feel that the other super high-rise hotels just don't have. The location is also perfect. It is a bit out of the madness of Waikiki...but within reasonable walking distance. Has its own beach right there. And a great coffee shop! Everything you need!
Waikiki, Honolulu
The Royal Hawaiian Resort is located right at Waikiki Beach and the view from the tower room was beautiful. The gardens are also very nice and the beach right in front of the hotel is clean and also beautiful. After staying there 13 years ago, I wanted to come back and relive the great memories I had of this place…
Great location staff is very nice properties very clean. We were very happy about our stay. Also room sizes a little small but having the queen beds really made up for it. It’s very hard to find two queen rooms in Hawaii. Most are doubles. Excellent hotel loved our stay here amazing value for money.!
Waikiki, Honolulu
Stayed there for my grandchild's registration at the Univeristy of Hawaii. It was acceptable. But they used to have a nice bar on the ground floor that is now closed. Can't imagine a place with so many rooms and a lack of a bar/dining room.
Kailua-Kona
Nice apartment hotel, with spacious and clean rooms. Balcony with view over the sea, nice pool. Nothing to complain about. Also we got the opportunity to use the pool and bathroom facilities as our flight out of Hawaii was an evening flight.
I liked the pool view facing room that overlooked the lush pool / bar area. The kitchenette was wonderful and the room was spacious with a great vintage Hawaiian design feel. I thought the location was amazing and central.
