FAQs about hotels in Malacca

History and Culture in Equal Measure

Historic Melaka (or Malacca) is the capital of the Malaysian state of the same name, home to one of the country’s first sultanates. The replica of the sultan’s palace is one of the city’s top attractions.

The end of the sultanate came with the Portuguese conquest of Melaka in the 16th century. Reminders of this period include part of A Famosa fort, and there is also a fort built by the next settlers, the Dutch. Several Dutch churches also remain, including Christ Church with its pinkish façade.

Nowadays, Melaka is a melting pot of various cultures, and Chinese temples, such as wonderful Cheng Hoon Teng, sit happily alongside Hindu temples and mosques. The most spectacularly located of the latter is Masjid Selat (or Malacca Straits Mosque), on stilts above waters lapping an offshore island.

Many Melaka hotels on Booking.com are near the promenade lining the narrow city beach, and others are near more secluded beaches in the suburbs. The Melaka River splits the city into 2, and the further inland you travel along it, the more traditional the buildings become.

Just before the river’s first bend is Jonker Street, the heart of Chinatown and popular for its night markets, while a few miles to the north is Melaka Airport in the Batu Berendam district.

My personal advice: Go and spend some time and enjoy yourself in Malacca. Lot of things to explore especially during weekends. Good people, good food but still take extra care of yourself when ever in a foreign place.

My Experience at Swiss Garden Melaka – A Warning to Future...

My Experience at Swiss Garden Melaka – A Warning to Future Guests I stayed at Swiss Garden Melaka, Room No. 028 on the 19th floor, from 18th to 19th July 2025. During my stay, my car — a Perodua Myvi with registration W xxx D — was damaged by a hit-and-run driver while parked in the hotel’s Level 7 guest parking area. I immediately reported the incident to the hotel on the same day but was told the management was on leave and asked to wait until the next working day. Since then, I have made numerous calls and sent multiple emails but have received no proper response. On 4th August 2025, I spoke with a staff member named Rohaya, who responded rudely and unprofessionally, refusing to provide answers and telling me to wait for a call from management. Shortly after, another staff member named Harith from the JMB department informed me that there is no CCTV coverage in the parking area and that the hotel cannot assist further. Swiss Garden Melaka is a 4-star hotel, yet their staff’s attitude and lack of responsibility in this matter are unacceptable. I parked my car right beside the lift in an area under their administration, and now I am forced to bear the repair costs alone. I urge Swiss Garden Melaka to take responsibility for the safety of their guests and their property. It is unfair for customers to be ignored and left to deal with such incidents without any support. To the public and future guests, please be cautious when parking your vehicles here. I hope my experience encourages the hotel to improve their service and accountability.

food and heritage site the main draw.

food and heritage site the main draw. Jonker street still good despite the closure of many antiques shops and old favourites. Nostalgic lanes, heritage architeture still intact and instagramable. But new shops have taken over and if cafes are your tick, then its good Peranakan Mansion for great nyonya food, chicken rice balls, cafes, SanSokKong for all your fav titbits Grabbing is easy, fast and price is reasonable Night view is nice esp the River Cruise and the loud music from the trishaw abit too jarring But the malls can do better, old run down and lacking

Melaka has never failed to captivate us even though we have visited it so many times. Such a vibrant town! Jonker street's stage is amazing! Last weekend, we enjoyed the Line dance performance by the senior ladies. Though wish they have one or two simpler moves so that lots of audience can join in ! Thank you Melaka for giving us such a wonderful time

Melaka is a state rich in culinary delights, beautiful beaches, and fascinating attractions. The nighttime scenery is especially breathtaking—particularly along the riverbank, where twinkling lights illuminate the city of Bandar Hilir in a stunning display. From Friday to Saturday, a lively night market springs to life, offering everything from mouthwatering street food to trendy clothing. And if you're lucky, you'll be serenaded by street performers and buskers who bring joyful energy and entertainment to the crowd.

Peranakan food and chendol is a must.

Peranakan food and chendol is a must. The chendol at Atlantic restaurant is one of the best where you can help yourself to the gula melaka. Was advised to go to Nancy's but we did not get the chance. Good nonya kueh was also difficult to find, it is all quite widespread. Jonker Street night market is interesting but the food offered looks better than it tastes. Nevertheless it is an experience. The kopitiams serve better food, like oyster omelette, beef kueh teow, fried carrot cake, laksa and yont tau foo, specifically Jonker Street Kopitiam at Taman Kota Laksamana

This is my second time staying at JonkeRED Heritage Hotel, and as usual, I would give it a high rating. It’s the best hotel to stay at in Jonker Street, Malacca. For me, it’s one of the closest hotels to Jonker Street—just a few minutes’ walk away. The room is clean, spacious, and comfortable. Everything is neatly arranged, and they provide some complimentary refreshments. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone planning to spend time around Jonker Street for delicious local food, heritage experiences, sightseeing, museums, and more.

I booked this hotel for 5 at the very last minute. It is in a great location, only a few minutes' walk to tourist attractions such as Jonker Street and the Clock Tower. The hotel has complete facilities, clean and tidy rooms and is comfortable to stay in. The owner also very friendly and helpful. We can have a very nice sea view from the balcony. Besides, Kampung Morten which have wonderful night view of Malacca River also not far from the hotel. Really highly recommended this hotel and confirm will re-book again.

The hotel is well placed close to Melaka Sentral Bus Station. I travelled from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka and it’s an easy journey. The hotel is close to a shopping mall and various fast food outlets but is about an hours walk from Melaka town centre - public transport to and from the town centre is difficult so walk or taxi are your options
