Plataniás is bustling - very busy full of shops (which are great) and restaurants. There are, unfortunately, too many places serving chips with everything! We wish there had been some more options, i.e. rice, authentic Cretan dishes, taverna based meals, but it is what it is. There was no need for a car - most places were walkable. Our villa was amazing, but we would not return to Plataniás - it seemed to have dropped down a notch since our trip last year. We saw quite a few young (and older) men walking around shirtless and some girls dressed quite inappropriately. I don't usually like touristy places but Platanias had a lovely feel about it. Not too many people, although this may have been because we went in September. We visited the War Museum - definitely worth it. Also went to John the Hermit cave and monastery at Kissimo which were unbelievable. The beach is nice, one can enjoy both sunrise & sunset at it. Warm waters. You must have beach shoes, as it is mostly made of rocks. You can go around by foot or bus, which runs every 20-30 minutes. Platanias has a good variety of shops, bar, restaurants to choose from, but our favourite by far was the SUN RISE BEACH RESTAURANT. I reallu enjoyed that it is a very relaxing hotel, we slept with windows opened, it is really silent and peacefull, although it is centrally located. it is just a few steps away from the main street and that makes a great difference. Close to several lovely restaurants with lovely views of sunsets over the Bay of Chania. Its easy to get the bus into Chania (every 30 minutes). Also a good base to explore western Crete if you have a hire car. Our apartment was very clean and spacious and the staff were very pleasant. Effi has made the seating areas and garden so beautiful to sit in. The beach is on your doorstep and shops around the corner. Effi went over and above to ensure all the guests had what they needed.
