Townsend is a great place to stay if you are averse to the craziness of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. We visited the Smoky Mountain Heritage Center, which was very well done. We hiked the Cades Cove Loop Road, which unfortunately was not closed to traffic on Wednesdays in May, as it has been in past years.
