Capital City With Small Town Charm
The charming Slovenian capital of Ljubljana is the only large city in the country. Dominated by Castle Hill with the medieval Ljubljana Castle on top, the city is a picturesque mix of Balkan architectural styles, romantic bridges and scenic views.
Due to two major earthquakes in 1511 and 1895 that destroyed many buildings, the Old Town features a range of styles: from Roman to Medieval Baroque and Viennese Secession. An interesting city to visit, a mixture of nice old buildings, well preserved historical monuments and interesting landmarks of city's architect Joze Plecnik. Interestingly despite nazi and italian fascists occupation, the city continued to evolve and Plecnik's plans continued during WW2. The city is split between centuries of Austrian domination and post WW2 communisf regims that ruled the country, while it was part of former Yugoslavia. Nice people though, strongly recommend taking one of the free tour (which starts from old city centre), good English speakers and collectively focused on promoting their city and country. Very commendable. Most important attractions are in the city centre and they all have the city castle as a not to miss spot (offers a belvedere point for the city and the outskirts). Ljubljana is a very green-focused place. We loved the forests. The main tourist area is very pretty. As we visited in early August it was very busy particularly on the Thursday and Friday. We had wonderful weather (between 27 and 34 degrees) on our 5 day (Wednesday to Monday) stay. There are a plethora of cafes and restaurants along the river and staff are friendly and efficient. There are a number of different markets each week with a bric-a-brac market on Sunday mornings. It is clean and friendly. The castle is a must see. It is a good place to have a day trip to Lake Bled and Trieste. It is an easy place to walk around as long as you are wearing comfortable footwear. We eat at a variety of different eateries all of which were enjoyable. Slovenia is beautiful country and Ljublana is one of the gems of this country. There is history (the old town with castle, bridges, houses), modern art (gallery, architecture of several buildings, street art, various statues), many nice places to chill out (the market, the streets along the river, parks), kind people and the city itself is not too expensive. Lubljana is an amazing city. the locals are friendly, the nature and architects are so beautiful that all what you want is to walk in the streets and see all these bridges, buildings etc. I would recommend to take some guide tours to know the history and local stories, they are very interesting. Beautiful diverse city. Lots to do with a great bus and train service to other places such as Lake Bled and the Caves. I would recommend doing one of the many tours available from the tourist office on the first day of your stay to get a real feeling for the city and its history. Great location if you are planning to tour the city centre (approx 6-8 minutes of normal walk to the Triple Bridge). We were able to park in a garage under the hotel. Delicious breakfast, maybe a nice thing would be to have a list of allergens at things like pastry, if not at everything. The rooms were also nicely sound proofed, that you weren't constantly hearing other people or noise from rooms around you. We can only recommend to stay at this place.
