The Jewel in the Sicilian Crown
As you admire crystal-clear turquoise seas from a Taormina piazza drenched with vibrant pink blossoms, you might have to pinch yourself. The amazing location of this picturesque town is its crowning glory.
But wait, there's more. Surrounded by trees just below the main town, the largely intact Greek Theater has amazing views across the stage towards Mount Etna fuming away in the distance. Great summer performances are still held here, and several of the town’s bars feature live music.
Corso Umberto I runs through the heart of Taormina, from Piazza Corvaja to the 13th-century cathedral, and houses many shops and cafés. Midway along is Piazza IX Aprile, with a clock tower and church overlooked by a rocky hill topped with a castle.
A cable car runs from the town down to the beautiful Taormina beaches (where the train station is also found). At the center of the W-shaped bay is little Isola Bella, an island nature reserve. To the southwest, there's a long stretch of sand at Giardini-Naxos, and to the north is the bay by Mazzaró.

We were in the area of Taormina for three days and could have used more time- because there are so many other places to visit as side trips as well. Lovely town - crowded in the evenings but we still were able to find availability at good restaurants. Besides the high end shopping there were some lovely boutiques as well. Wonderful bakeries and cafes. Cable car down to the beach. Many hotels have walking paths to town , but may have to walk in road a bit for some of them.Guest review bySarah - 10.0

Taormina is beautiful with historical buildings as well as a breath taking bay and park which displays World War One memorabilia. There are a number of restaurants around the town and the food was delicious at each we visited. Beautiful setting high up on the cliffs.The Greek theatre was amazing, and views from here were spectacular. Great place to use as a base for exploring the region - Mount Etna is a must see/do, as are the villages of . Castelmola and Savoca. Found Taormina much more expensive, touristy and busy than other parts of Sicily that we stayed in. Taormina is a spectacular town. Walking through the street is a delight and the views from the city are amazing. Seeing Isola Bella from the lookout or smoke rising from Mt Etna in the distance are so special. Taormina is one of the most beautiful places I have visited. So much choice of places to eat. Lots of shops and we loved people watching of an evening. Lots of history and absolutely loved the Teatro Antico where we saw Simple Minds. The skyline is dominated by Mount Etna which because is active was smoking. It was worth the investment. The private pool and private beach were fantastic for relaxing, soaking up the sun, and escaping the chaos of Taormina. It was easy to park our car there (for an additional cost) and to drive to other locations and see Sicily. The breakfast location was great, and the pool bar was convenient for drinks and food. Not in the centre of the town so not noisy during the day and evening. The hotel has large grounds so you don't feel too cramped. Lots of places for walks and privacy.
