We have visited beautiful Monopoli before just for a few hours and we wanted to visit for more. We would like to visit again if the beach to be "restored". The city is beautiful but not so big and this leaves time to relax and enjoy great food and drinks (expensive though). Beware on train schedule since it can be complicated and have some surprises. We wish the city had better connection with other cities (besides Polignano), then it could be a "base" for longer vacation giving the chance to visit other places every day. Monopoli is set up for tourists.
Monopoli is set up for tourists. It is a very attractive old town consisting of many alleyways lined with lovingly tended gardens. The locals certainly take a pride in maintaining and cleaning the old town. It is the centre of the local fishing industry and the locals can be seen visiting the fishing boats and purchasing their fish. The restaurants specialise in including an extensive array of interesting fish dishes and they delight in choosing the local wines to complement the menu choices. For me it was better than expected! . There are a lot of Plazas and in one of them very close to our Stay, we even saw a live convert. The beach was only 10 minutes walking and the water was delicious. The street, the restaurants, the little shops, the whole ambiance was perfect! The weather and the food was excellent.
The weather and the food was excellent. Our trip to Grotta Palazzese was special. It was a bit pricey but worth the memories. Our trip to Alberobello to see the cone shape roofs was amazing. If you are planning a trip in Puglia, I think Monopoli is the best place to stay. Much more beautiful, clean and charismatic than Bari. And the old town just took my breath away. It is close to every other town you may want to visit and local people are helpful and nice. In Monopoli almost everything is in max 15-20 min of walking.
