Capital City With Small Town Charm
The charming Slovenian capital of Ljubljana is the only large city in the country. Dominated by Castle Hill with the medieval Ljubljana Castle on top, the city is a picturesque mix of Balkan architectural styles, romantic bridges and scenic views.
Due to two major earthquakes in 1511 and 1895 that destroyed many buildings, the Old Town features a range of styles: from Roman to Medieval Baroque and Viennese Secession. Ljubljana is a very green-focused place.
Ljubljana is a very green-focused place. We loved the forests. The main tourist area is very pretty. As we visited in early August it was very busy particularly on the Thursday and Friday. We had wonderful weather (between 27 and 34 degrees) on our 5 day (Wednesday to Monday) stay. There are a plethora of cafes and restaurants along the river and staff are friendly and efficient. There are a number of different markets each week with a bric-a-brac market on Sunday mornings. It is clean and friendly. The castle is a must see. It is a good place to have a day trip to Lake Bled and Trieste. It is an easy place to walk around as long as you are wearing comfortable footwear. We eat at a variety of different eateries all of which were enjoyable. There is history (the old town with castle, bridges, houses), modern art (gallery, architecture of several buildings, street art, various statues), many nice places to chill out (the market, the streets along the river, parks), kind people and the city itself is not too expensive. Lubljana is an amazing city. the locals are friendly, the nature and architects are so beautiful that all what you want is to walk in the streets and see all these bridges, buildings etc. I would recommend to take some guide tours to know the history and local stories, they are very interesting. Beautiful diverse city. Lots to do with a great bus and train service to other places such as Lake Bled and the Caves. I would recommend doing one of the many tours available from the tourist office on the first day of your stay to get a real feeling for the city and its history. Local trasport is easy and person can reach every corner of the town with local buses. The centre of the town is really lovely.
