Overall the place was great - I loved the no shoes policy, able to walk around in the provided tabi socks was a treat.
The room was spacious overall and comfortable for the price.
Location was nice not too far from the station and next to a couple of really nice restaurants.

It was traditional, but with modern comforts and efficiency! Everything was well-thought out, and the space well-designed. Lots of details added to make each room comfortable and aesthetically-pleasing! Also - the futon was so comfortable it was the first good-night’s sleep we had in Japan!

I loved everything about this place. Absolutely the highlight of my trip. And funny enough, there was no other guests so I had the whole place to myself! The town is very cute and the house is just incredible. It had everything a person could ask for in an accommodation. Everything works perfectly. The design is very beautiful. The house is even more beautiful in real life. I will never forget it. I think I told Assi how much I loved it too many times :)
Assi was the most helpful host, he was very friendly, curious to know about my trip, he even picked me up from the station when I unfortunately missed the train. And dropped me off to the bus stop when I wanted to visit the near village. I hope to visit it again in future. Thank you again, thank you very much.

A thoroughly lovely place, well off the beaten track. Excellent hot springs facilities. Excellent food. Wonderful place to pause and relax amid busy travels.

Getting to our ryokan was a simple bus ride to the town from the train station. We were graciously greeted by the host of the ryokan. Delicious traditional dinner with many small dishes, all prepared with care. We started our hike early from Magome to Tsuamgo without many tourists which was a plus to take in the tranquility of the trail. The waterfalls along the way were impactful. Stopped for lunch in Tsumago and had cold soba with grilled fish, simple but delicious.
If you decide to take the bus back to Magome in the late afternoon, be prepared to wait, there may be a line and the bus only runs every half hour, depending on the day.

We stayed in Nakatsugawa in order to spend time walking on the Nakasendo Trail. It was a good home base for doing so!
It’s possible to take a cab or a bus to the post towns to start your walk, or to end it.
Nakatsugawa is also known for its abundant chestnut snacks and sweets which we sampled and truly enjoyed.
It was really nice to be in a part of Japan that has fewer tourists and is more quiet.

This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa.
This is about Magome Juku - not Nakatsugawa. Frankly whilst it's quaint, picturesque and reasonably true to form it's frankly a bit of a tourist trap and quite crowded. The buildings are almost all souvenir shops or restaurant / tea houses. With a few exceptions many are selling the same stuff, usually at higher prices than can be bought elsewhere. Glad we went but won't return

As previously reviewed, we are still annoyed that we had to argue at length with the staff (over half an hour) to have the sofa bed made up with linen. Their policy apparently is to only provide linen when there are 3 guests sharing the room advertised as 'Double Bed plus Sofa' and confirmed in writing via booking.com that I had booked a room with 2 beds. The hotel was demanding further payment otherwise my friend and I were expected to share the bed. They eventually agreed to make an exception. The air con unit also only had instructions in Japanese and we found it impossible to turn it down The room was very small and the aircon unit sounded all night as if we were flying in an airplane.

Nakatsugawa was a very pleasant town with an excellent shopping centre and good restaurants. Soba noodle seem to be a specialty in many. It was also a handy base for taking a bus to Magome for the Nakasendo Way walk to Tsumago and in the opposite direction to Ochiai, via the historic stone-paved 800m road.

Our primary reason for visiting was the walk from Magome to Tsumago. It's a lovely outing. Very enriching to see Japanese countryside after the big cities of central Honshu. The quality and restfulness of Iwasu-so was an unexpected delight.
Oh gosh, what a place! Nakatsugawa is such an incredible place and should be on more traveler's itineraries. I loved the ryokan stay, and this one is way more affordable than most any other place in Japan. 3 minutes walking from train station. Staff - so friendly! Free luggage storage before or after your stay. Right next to a very nice coffee shop, public transport, restaurants, and supermarkets. The lounge area is heated and super pleasant with great wifi. Free coffee/tea also. Best place to stay in Nakatsugawa, I would think.
Front desk is superb. They have nicely folded origami to give out to little children - and my daughter was delighted! The rooms were nice and clean. We have two non-connected rooms, but as it was the peak travel season, we were glad we found a nice hotel like this one. Its location was also excellent. If you stay here, you must eat at the Prince Matsuba, Nakatsugawa - just opposite the hotel! During my entire stay in Chubu, this restaurant provides the best food at the most reasonable price and great servings.
This is someone's home with only two rooms available to rent, which makes the stay extremely unique and personal. I stayed two nights at the end of my hiking the Nakasendo, and just relaxed and enjoyed the traditional house. Not much in town, but the Okonomiyaki restaurant down the road was a treat, as i was welcomed by the owner and the guests and had a wonderful evening. SHIGI has only recently been renovated by the new owner, speaks great English is very helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay!
This is similar to a homestay accommodation. We had much more room than expected for just 2 of us. Our host was welcoming and gave us a thorough tour of the unit. It was a special experience to stay overnight in the pretty town of Magome. The 2 level unit is conveniently located. There was food available for purchase in the fridge and cabinets which was handy in a town with few grocery options.
My stay at Nagataki was phenomenal! The location of the hotel is truly beautiful. The staff was extremely courteous and accommodating. As we didn't have a car, they helped pick us up and get to our excursions. The food is amazing -- truly delicious dinner and breakfast which was among the best food we had during our whole trip. We are so glad we stayed here during our trip in Japan.
What a fantastic stay we had!!! Keiko is a fantastic host, who cooks like a dream. Our favourite stay of our 3 weeks in Japan. The room we had was spacious and spotless. We walked to Tsumago and got the bus back so stayed 2 nights rather than doing baggage transfer. Use Nakatsugawa train station and get the bus to Magome Cannot recommend this place enough.
Beautiful hotel in a beautiful part of the town, right on the Nakasendo Trail. Convenient parking. So much charm and character and the staff were lovely and super helpful. Dinner and breakfast were both amazing - definitely recommend getting these! Very comfy futon and pillow, decent sizeroom with large cupboard for bags.
The small area is great for anyone wanting to see how traditional Japanese houses used to look like, Everything is so beautiful even outside the trail itself. The food is amazing! The many small shops arouns are cute and have a lot of good value items for a reasonable price! and the view frok the top is breathtaking!
The overall experience was excellent. The facilities were wonderful and new. The hot tub and the breakfast was amazing and the hotel was very clean and the staff very helpful. There was also a afternoon complimentary drink and snack which was very welcomed. We would recommend this hotel.
The place is fairly convenient. The room is clean and comfortable with all the amenities required for a short stay. Very polite and helpful staff, not to mention that the food is really nice! It comes with a complimentary breakfast but I had my dinner at the hotel as well and it was great.
Great location, very warm and cosy. We enjoyed being able to chat with other travellers in the lounge area and during breakfast. The ability to get a meal reservation via the hotel was super helpful in this small village.
The hotel looks like a beautiful little village for preservation. We slept in a small house that is over 150 years old. The staff is lovely, always looking for ways to help. Dinner and breakfast were works of art.
Friendly stuff , good location and affordable price .
Clean and cozy room with a tatami floor and nice smell.
The shared bathroom and toilet are clean.
Small version of a traditional Japanese fire place , so cute .
I really enjoyed my stay here, its normal old-style japanese family house so staying here was unique experience different from hotels. Also owner was very friendly and even drove me to the supermarket :-)
A small but very cozy family run inn right in the center of town. Great value, really delicious breakfast and dinner. The hinoki bath is a must. Perfect place to stay while exploring the Nakasendo trail.
Lovely hotel, The rooms were small but clean and nice bathroom. The onsen was lovely, very clean and nice facilities. Great location, easy walk to the train, bus station as well as local restaurants.
Our host was very accommodating, he helped us make a booking for dinner and also drove a friend who was staying elsewhere back to his hotel for a small fee - that was really appreciated.
Dinner and breakfast were japanese style and there were delicious! Location of the hotel is perfect and it's traditional style fits the Nakasendo trail.
