Excellent location for a book shopping trip to Wigtown. I honestly wish we had been able to stay more than one night - the hosts were wonderful - very friendly and gracious with advice and recommendations for our continued journey to Glasgow and Edinburgh (Mal recommended taking the coastal road which was a scenic delight). Breakfast was superb - my first time trying haggis and black pudding, both of which were terrific. The rooms were spotless, spacious, and well appointed and the beds were quite comfortable. If our future travels brings us to the area, this will be our first choice for accommodations!

    Not much in Creetown itself.

Not much in Creetown itself. But Galloway National Park just up the road with beautiful spots to explore all day. A great base for the area. Best food selection in Castle Douglas. Excellent restaurant - The Olive Retreat.

It's great if you have a car because you can explore lots of cool things around Galloway, but the town itself is a bit run-down, loads of empty buildings, but there are two museums, a shop, and a pub/restaurant.

This is a fantastic location- beautiful walks, a hugely interesting museum almost next door- highly recommended- and Gem Rock Museum with its amazing displays, and great cafe with homemade food. Really good and hugely appreciated the Barholm has dog friendly rooms, and highly accommodating and helpful in multiple ways. The staff of the Creetown Museum were fascinating and so patient explaining and guiding us around this treasure of a place. So kind to let us bring our dog in on a quiet wet day Would surely payback many times over if dogs were similarly allowed in even a corner of the GM cafe, rather than to sit on outside tables. The soup was lovely however and the kind lady server was extremely helpful however in providing waterproof covers for seats and offer of umbrella Really Creetown is a gem of a place in itself Can’t really praise Barholm and Creetown Initiative highly enough

It is a quiet area good for exploring the local area from.

It is a quiet area good for exploring the local area from. It has good travel connections by bus to Newton Stewart, Stranraer, and Dumfries. Popular with cyclists for access to national cycle route 7 , the 7 stanes centres of kirroughtree and Glen trool via the clatteringshaws loch trail. The Cairnsmore summit for walkers is close by as is the cairnsmore visitor centre. Creetown itself has a gem museum and local heritage centre. Cafes at the Gem museum and on the Castle Cary holiday centre nearby with a local restaurant. Creetown is compact and easy to walk around with granite sculptures from a renowned Japanese sculptor in the town square. Unfortunately the local hotel Ellengowan hotel whose saloon bar featured in the 1973 film The Wickerman closed in 2019.

We weren’t staying here particularly for Creetown itself, but because it was a good location for visiting the entire area. It is an easy drive round to Wigtown, and we could access trails and sights with a shortish drive. We had a good meal at the local Lairds Inn. And it’s a short drive to Newton Stewart for grocery shopping (Sainsbury, Aldi).

Small village with an interesting history (Most of the liverpool docks stone comes from the area). Well cept, clean and tidy. A profusion of whiskey barrels give a clue to the other industry in the village. The village shop is excellent. It's a shame that there is no restaraunt or pub, but Newton Stewart has all the facillities you would need if you don't mind driving or cycling.
