The location : simply perfect, inside the closure of the cathedral, which means it's very peaceful after 5 and before 10. Your room goes with free entrance to the exceptional cathedral; also, do try and go to Evensong service. Very welcoming hosts. Good cooked breakfast. Easy parking. Our bedroom was very comfortable, with a lovely view, no frills, the bathroom on the small side.

FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Canterbury really surprised me in being much nicer than most places I've visited in the UK. The north west side of the town centre (from Westgate tower) in particular reminded me of how good England could look 50 years ago with cobbled streets and beautiful buildings. Definitely visit Westgate Gardens, small, but beautiful. Only thing I would complain about is the ridiculous charge not only to get in to the cathedral but to even walk outside it.

I love the antiquity of the buildings and the river Stour, with lots of flowers and bushes along its banks and with punts drifting on the river. Trying to drive through those narrow streets is a bit of a nightmare but we were able to walk into town. Certain parts are very romantic. To get into the cathedral would cost us practically £80 for four of us so perhaps we can return another time and make a good day of it to get our money's worth.

Canterbury is, of course, dominated by the wonderful cathedral but the excellent largely pedestrianised centre is interesting and full of local speciality and national shops. We would recommend the park and ride bus service if you arrive by car. It is sensibly priced, frequent, reliable and really easy to use.

Canterbury was a great place to visit, full of history but also stunning architecture. The beautiful streets lent itself to eating out, great walking, especially by Westgate, lovely ice creams and lots to see. The Roman villa was interesting and the cathedral was stunning. Particularly liked Posillipo Italian restaurant and Kingz Wingz! both of which we could eat outside with a scooter. The Beanie Information centre has very helpful staff, which were friendly and very informative. It would be good to have a guide just for wheelchair access, although the cycle lanes were very handy and well designed.

This was my wife's favourite place to stay during our break. It was clean. It was also quiet, which impressed me given one evening there was live music in the pub below. By chance, they happened to serve my favourite beer from my student days, and I can assure you I did test it, although not in my student day style. The Inn is very well placed to explore both Canterbury and the surrounding area, being in walking distance of the town centre, well placed for driving, and very close to one of the railway stations.

Location is perfect for a visit to Canterbury. Staff is friendly and helpfull. Free parking available on hotelsite and 10 min. walk to citycentre. Beds were good and bathroom fully renewed and clean. Although the restaurant was closed due to refurbishment, they still serve dinner in the bar area. Food was very tastefull. Communication upfront arrival was good and they mention the refurbishment works going on. But as a guest we didn't hear anything (summerholliday)

What an amazing house. Everything we needed was there. Very comprehensive information. The beds were really comfortable so a couple of us struggled to get out of their nest in the morning!!!
