Bessiestown Country Guesthouse, hotel in Canonbie

In a countryside setting between Gretna Green and Hadrian’s Wall, this multi-award-winning country guest house offers home cooking, pretty bedrooms with attached bathroom and a friendly welcome.

Bessietown receives consistent high reviews on booking.com and the rating is well deserved. We (wife and I) spent one night at Bessietown and our only regret is that our travel plans did not permit a longer stay. Services offered were excellent. Our accommodation was superb, being large, well equipped with a very high standard of cleanliness. The hosts were great and provided a very nice breakfast. We recommend Bessietown as a place to say. You won't be disappointed.

Was initially just a layover on the drive from Edinburgh to London but turned out to be a nice, quiet place with some interesting history and kind people. I liked the church and graveyard, walk by the river and all the cute houses with flower gardens. There's a heritage walk too but didn't get a chance to do it. Stone's throw from Hadrian's Wall and Gretna Green for shopping and exploring. If you like peace and quiet, history and old buildings plus supporting small communities, definitely swing by.

Only stayed the night, arrived late evening and left early morning so don't know anything about the area - other than it was very quiet, and rural with no sign of much activity - however I just visited the hotel which was great

Canonbie is a small village with the Cross Keys hotel at the one end. It is a couple of hundred years old and full of character. Food was excellent and served by polite and obliging staff. They will cater for all types. (I am Diabetic and Coeliac). I would certainly stay there again. They are getting over the effects of Covid on the establishment but are making great strides in their recovery. They deserve your patronage.

A very pretty little village with great walks up and down the local river. We found a cute little painted stone trail made up by local children with small and large hand painted pebble located all along the stone wall running by the river. Much fun to follow this and try to find them all.
