It's a very quaint little town .
It's a very quaint little town . There are lovely walks by the river past the castle walls we managed to see a kingfisher which was a big bonus. The castle itself is well worth a visit and just up the road is the Bowes museum . Do go and visit that especially around 2.pm the staff let you see a beautiful model of a swan that still works and is over 250 years old, the restaurant there is very nice as well.
We will do our best to stop again next year on our way north .

First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.
The hosts (Glenda and Daniele) were wonderful and very kind. We had two rooms: two of us were in the garden room, which was absolutely wonderful. I stayed in the single person room (room 1) which was quite small, but equipped with every amenity and comfortable. Both rooms were on the garden and very quiet at night.
The breakfast was the best English breakfast I have ever had in many trips to the UK!
Parking on the street was free, and it is 10 minute walk to the town centre.
I enjoyed staying at Homelands while I was visiting Barnard Castle. The guesthouse is beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. My double en-suite room was exceptionally comfortable. The hosts were warm, welcoming and extremely helpful to get to know. Local, high quality ingredients were used in the excellent breakfast. Upon arrival, I was even greeted with homemade cake. All in all, my stay was excellent and I am looking forward to a return visit.
The location was ideal as it was in the centre of the town, with all of the facilities nearby, including the castle, which was our reason for visiting Barnard Castle. The restaurant/breakfast room was very clean and the staff were friendly and efficient. We enjoyed the breakfast but the black pudding was rather dry and the poached eggs whites were not fully cooked. The cleanliness of the hotel, overall was excellent.
The staff were so welcoming, knowledgeable and accommodating. They were not yet open for meals for the season yet but were still able to serve us a drink when we arrived. After trekking all day, this was a great treat. The room was clean and comfortable. The town is small and cute.
The bedroom was unusually spacious, with a very large, comfortable bed, good, large furniture, and a large full bathroom. The breakfast was exceptional with a friendly staff. The location was perfect for our needs in town. Will stay here again if in the region.
Lovely apartment. Right in the center of Barnard castle. Very cozy. Lovely bathroom. Lovely touch from the proprietors on arrival. Milk bread biscuits and cereal. All your cleaning stuff if needed. Nothing wasn't thought off, we will definitely be back again
