Welcoming Galway is a small city with fantastic nightlife and an infectious atmosphere. Outside of the Galway Arts Festival, there’s still plenty of live music in the Irish pubs to get the party started.
The Galway Races at Ballybrit Race Course west of Galway Airport attract a good crowd, as does Eyre Square, a green space with flags of previous ruling families who gave it its nickname - City of Tribes. To the south are cobbled streets housing brightly colored shops and restaurants.
Sights in Galway include its cathedral and city museum which has an interesting insight into the history of the city and Ireland. Lynch’s Castle is the last remaining 17th-century merchant house, and the Spanish Arch is a small section of city walls by the Corrib River, linking Galway Bay to huge Loch Corrib. Where river and ocean meet is Claddagh Park, a great spot for a picnic with a view.
Further around the coast is Salthill Promenade, home to Atlantaquaria, Ireland’s national aquarium, focussing on sealife off Irish shores. It’s a Christmas Day tradition to jump from Blackrock Diving Tower nearby into the icy Atlantic Ocean, though you may well spot some wag giving it a go.
Booking.com has an excellent range of Galway hotels, apartments and B&Bs to complete your stay.
We are not rapid checklist types. We go to off-the-beaten-path sites and avoid tourist traps. Galway has both. We found it really charming once we escaped the crowded streets in the Latin Quarter, but you can find quiet times there, too, when the tour-buses leave.

I was surprised at the number of tourists in Galway town.
I was surprised at the number of tourists in Galway town. It's a very interesting and atmospheric place reflecting the Irish love of music on every corner and every pub. We tried to book several recommended restaurants but they were full. This however, worked to our advantage as for several nights, we ate and drank at The Quays...which should not be missed, enjoying the live music as we ate and drank (not too much drink though!) It was the Irish evening I'd dreamed of for sooo long.

Galway was a great place to start our touring along the Wild Atlantic Way meandering along the coastline and through the national parks. Galway City has plenty to offer with great food, accommodation, cafes, walks, shopping, even catching the bus to Salthill and walk along the promenade and least but not last great Guinness.

Lovely town , and a great base to travel from if you have a car. Lots of bars and restaurants in the town, many with live traditional music. Plenty of attractions within a 2 hour drive ... Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, Westport and Clonmacnoise, to name but a few ...

I wish I could say I loved my time in Galway.
I wish I could say I loved my time in Galway. After spending 9 days touring Ireland, Galway felt like a tourist trap. I have heard great things about this town so was really disappointed. It was a cute town, but extremely busy and packed full of tourists. We had a hard time getting dinner and missed hanging out with locals. The only bright spot about that day was that the Leonardo hotel was wonderful! It was a fantastic location, easy to get in and out of, clean and bright. Really fantastic breakfast!
Location was great as we trained into Galway from Dublin. And we watched all over the city center very conveniently. Just about a minute from Erye Square. The staff were efficient and polite during check in and for our stay. The room was nice even though the hotel is older. It seemed clean upon check-in.
The best stay in Ireland so far. Better than some 4 star hotels in Dublin. The check-in and out were smooth and easy, the room has exceeded our expectations. Very clean, with a big shower and nice mini fridge and coffee serving. It also seemed like it was recently refurbished or brand new.
The spa was just amazing, one of the best massages I had so far. Staffs always with a smile on the face and very friendly. The hotel location couldn't be in a better place, just beside the train and bus station and just few minutes by walk from city center.
The property is in a very central location. It had a lot of history connected to the hotel. The breakfast was really nice. We had recently stayed in lots of hotels in Ireland and I would rate this the best breakfast. The staff are also very friendly.
The rooms are above the pub. Check in is in the bar. Personnel (bartender) was very kind. The room was great. Perfect location close to the city center. Parking js beside the hotel on a public paid carpark. €2 per hour (mon-sat until 6.30 pm)
Great location. Not crammed into city centre but very close to it, and with free parking. Cute little restaurant with delicious desserts. Accommodated us with a fan for the room. Comfortable beds, decent sized room, and very friendly staff.
The location was great! Less than a 10min walk to Eyre Square, City Centre. Wonderful breakfast! Fantastic salmon and one of the very few places that know how to make an omlette to perfection! The owner/staff was so very helpful & kind!
surprisingly excellent hotel given the cost. Perfect location in between train station and city center. incredibly helpful staff, clean room, nice and updated facilities. would definitely stay here again.
The house is a little bit away from the Galway city center, but not too far away. It is a good option to stay in the apartment instead of hotels in Galway because it is better value. Great neighbourhood.
Very friendly people and unlike hotels a little bit less formal, great location and on the 402 bus route so 15 minutes to Galway city centre. Nice walk to Salthill and all round really good 👍
Had good Air conditioning which most of the hotels in Ireland that we stayed at either didn’t or were very weak. Close to everything, was easy to walk to all the attractions in the city.
The hotel is perfectly located - very close to the city center and train station (5 min), but just far enough away to feel quiet. The room was also nicely laid out. It felt very modern.
Room is quite big, as well as the bathroom
Beds are very comfortable
Hotel is not far from the city center but you need a car to go there (around 4 min by car)
clean, super helpful staff, the food in the hotel restaurant was absolutely amazing! not far of a drive into Galway city centre, great onsite parking available.
