FAQs about hotels in Bergamo

A Bastion of Old World Charm

The arrival point of low-cost airlines with cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.

One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its sidewalk cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The nextdoor Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.

Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by a cable car.

A cable car also descends to the modern town, Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, across from the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC plays in a stadium to the northeast, while southwest is the train station where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.

Booking.com has several Bergamo hotels near the airport and the neighboring Orio Center shopping complex.

    Beautiful town, especially Alta.

Beautiful town, especially Alta. We found this location great for using public transport. We took the train to Milan on one day and a train to Lake Garda another day. The people are friendly and lots of choice for food and drinks.

Bergamo is split into 2 parts Bassa and Alta.

Bergamo is split into 2 parts Bassa and Alta. The lower part (Bassa) is bigger, busier, more modern but still great to visit ( a must see is the Accademia Carrara- wonderful paintings that you can get amazingly close to). The tourists head for Citta Alta which is the stunning fortified old town perched on top of a steep hill with cobbled, narrow streets, beautiful Piazzas, cafe, restaurants and stunning architecture. A great place just to stroll around, meander along the back streets or walk along the ancient Venetian walls. Day-trippers disappear at night and many groups stay in Bergamo Bassa leaving it much quieter and very pleasant at night in the old town with loads of good eateries, bars, cafes and gelaterias to visit. If you're there ay 10pm listen to the bells of the Campanone, Palazzo del Podestà in the Piazza Vecchia, tolling 100 chimes- a reminder of the old curfew when the town gates where due to close, yes they still;l do it every night and we loved the sound of the bells. Top reason we stop in Bergamo is it's location. and it's brilliant connections by train, bus or flights. We arrived by train from Ravenna and got a town bus from opposite the main train station up to the top Citta Alta for 1.75 euro and later flew out from Bergamo Orio al Serio airport. You can get a bus direct to the airport from the top of the old town or at various stops down through the town to opposite the train station- costs 3euros one way , so cheap and super convenient. TOP TIP if you're going to the airport and staying in the old town then join the bus at the start of the route at Colle Aperto (next to La Marianna ice cream cafe) because the bus gets super busy on the way down and picks up so many people that you can't move by the time you get to Bergamo Bassa. I wouldn't recommend taking the bus if you've got large suitcases or lots of luggage as it just gets too crowded and you may not be allowed on.

Although I have been to Bergamo 24 years ago, I don't remember it being so beautiful and interesting. The Architecture is amazing, with beautiful, grand buildings almost everywhere you look in the city centre and so clean and attended to. Wonderful variety of cafes and restaurants along the main street, with a very effective, regular bus timetable which we used every day to get to and from Citta Alta where we stayed. The train station had regular trains that took us to Milan 45 minutes away and also to the mountains and lakes. Bergamo Citta Alta is also beautiful with many buses going to and fro every 10 / 15 minutes from the city. Food and service in both areas are really very good and although the staff appreciated my Italian attempts, most spoke English. Food and travel were also good value. Recommend train ride to Varenna on Lake Como, absolutely beautiful! Can't wait to go to Bergamo again.

It may just have been the time of year we went (April) but very few restaurants in our immediate area stayed open late. We arrived at one at 9.20pm to be told that they were shortly closing the kitchen! By the time we got to another we were told we would have to chose quickly what we wanted to eat as they were closing soon. So we felt quite rushed to choose and eat. We ate at Vox restaurant on 2 nights which was very nice and they stayed open late. The nearest supermarket advertised as closing at 9pm but would not let us in for just one item at 8.45pm! The area was ideal to use as a base to visit other areas; Milan, Lake Garda and Lake Como and also nearby Verona Citta alta was lovely though although we only went there in the daytime so can't comment on places to eat an evening meal.

Beautiful new town with many shops and cafes.

Beautiful new town with many shops and cafes. And a very interesting old town with 12th-13th century architecture, narrow streets and beautiful churches. It sits on a high hill and has stunning views of the new town. There are plenty of cafes and pizzerias where you can try delicious pizza and eat a delicious cake.

Really lovely hotel in what is a truly beautiful city. Bergamo is a must-visit place and this hotel, which is extremely close to the funicular that takes you to Bergamo Alta (the old town, essentially) is the perfect base from which to explore. Great WiFi. Extremely pleasant and helpful staff. Large, cool, relaxed reception area. Superb breakfast buffet, beautifully presented and arranged. Comfortable room and bed. Directly across the road from the local bus service that goes directly to Milan-Bergamo airport.

We’ve stayed at the Arli before - it’s our regular haunt when we come to Bergamo - but it’s been smartened up in recent years, and is now a very stylish as well as a very comfortable hotel, centrally located in the lower town, 5 mins walk from the railway station and less than 10 minutes from the funicular to the citta alta. I also have to say something about the breakfast - really outstanding, a great buffet selection, fresh fruits, pastries, cold meats, eggs, high quality and good value for money. Highly recommended all round.

AMAZING LOCATION right in the old city (città alta) - must be one of the most romantic towns in Italy with a bustling night life and amazing selection of good food/drink. The room itself is also very comfortable and homely - beautiful old wooden floors and dresser. old fashioned in the best sense. Great communication and friendliness from staff - compliments to Alexia! The aircon was a saving grace at night as the natural ventilation is quite weak.

Le Funi is comfortable, clean and modern yet charming hotel - with delicious breakfast & coffees and fantastic staff (special mention to Jean Luigi and Bladi for the travel tips and lovely chats). A beautiful hotel in Citta Alta (the high part of the city or Old Town) with spectacular views. It is a lovely area to spend a few days - narrow winding streets with a variety of unique shops and fabulous authentic restaurants.

The location was perfect, just in the heart of the citta alta of Bergamo, even it was in the city center, it was not noisy! The staff was super friendly and helpful. The hotel didn't have a parking in the same building, but there was a parking 6min walking from the hotel. The staff from the hotel booked for us in advance a spot in the parking.
