This hotel, in a cave, was one if the most comfortable and luxurious stays I have ever had. The suite was very comfortably furnished, and the enormous bathroom with soaking tub and great shower was to die for. The Italians specialize in beautiful breakfasts to start the day, and this one was truly primo.

Had wanted to visit Matera for many years and it lived up to our expectations. Beautiful historic city and easy to walk around. We had a couple of good meals , one terrible and fine dining experience a massive let down. This can happen in any city just your luck sometimes you can be unlucky.

Always depends on your expectations, but our feeling was Matera was definitively worth 1 full day or 2, especially if you hike to the point of view on the other side of the little canyon, and/or visit a few historic monuments. We could not visit the famous trogloditic crypts of the original sin since the touristic site to make the compulsory reservations (1 day in advance) is such an absurd mess.

The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia.
The must see place when traveling to Bari/Apulia. The ancient city is exceptional and definitely worth staying over the night . You easily get lost when walking around (GPS is not very helpful) but it is part of the adventure;) . Be prepared to climb many steps and take your time to enjoy the unique climate of the place.

Matera is a beautiful place with stunning views of the sassi and cave dwellings. There are also some interesting attractions that you can visit to gain a better understanding of how people used to live and what Matera went through before becoming a UNESCO site and the amazing place it is today.
One such attraction is Casa Noha, which is a multimedia demonstration inside a historic stone house. It provides a helpful insight into the history of Matera and the struggles of cave-dwelling life.
Another interesting place to visit is Casa Grotta nei Sassi di Matera, which is not just a cave-dwelling but also a living museum. You can experience what it was like to live in a cave with a straw bed, tiny kitchen, and livestock all within the confines of the cave.
Chiesa Rupestre della Madonna della Croce is a church located on the other side of the Sassi. It offers great views and is definitely worth the drive from Matera.

We had a wonderful time at Matera.
We had a wonderful time at Matera. The people were very friendly even though the season was just about to start and alot of facilities were still closed. We had a great first of the season meal at Enoteca dai Tosi with a tour of the facility. Tasted new wine, delicious meats from the local butcher, local cheeses, and some dishes from the new menu. The town is so beautiful, that you can't take a bad picture. You must prepare for a lot of stairs and walking...have comfortable shoes...
The town was even prettier at night. It was great! We wanted to stay longer and keep exploring....
perfectly located in the old part of Matera.
Staff was very friendly and responsive as we checked by message for parking solution.
We parked just 300 m away from the hotel in a secured car park where we left our bikes at the car.
The room in a cave was perfect for us to cool down and relax before we went out to explore in the later afternoon.
We arrived in August so it was super hot during the day.
Breakfast also very good, dog friendly, wifi worked well.
We hope to be able to come back.
The staff at Sant’Angelo was truly amazing!!Everyone was so gracious, helpful and knowledgeable .Michele was fantastic. He went out of his way to make everything perfect for me and my family. This was the most amazing stay at this hotel. My grandparents are from Matera, so it was really special. The resort was like no other! The stunning views, the authenticity of the caves (with some added glam). The magical city views ! This is a must if you’re going to Matera. I can’t wait to go back.
Rooms were obviously so unique, ours was inside the cave and huge. Sleeping here was such a unique experience, I loved it. The location and view from the hotel was amazing as well. Breakfast was EXCELLENT- plenty of selections, good quality food and the view on the outdoor patio was breathtaking. I didn't want to get up from the breakfast table. The pizza restaurant right beside the hotel was also so so so good. If you're in Matera, pizzeraia "Piu Sud" is a must.
Amazing location in the Sassi. Stairs to reach it and a little hard to find until you get your head around Matera map. The hotel’s instructions for parking were helpful. We stayed 2 nights and had upgraded to a balcony suite which was located next to the hotel - excellent views and large rooftop deck for evening drinks. Large living room and a bedroom both with good sized windows. Older style furnishings and terrazzo floors. Good breakfast buffet.
If you go to Matera , stay at Basiliani hotel. It is a wonderful discovery. The view from the room is amazing, the hotel staff is super welcoming and helpfull, the beds are confortable and the situation of the hotel is a little exentrated from the bustle of the city center so you can sit and relax . The breakfast was really good and we sat outside on the terrasse enjoying the quietness and the beautiful view. To summarize: go, go, go...
Small hotel, practically situated on the fringe of Sassi Caveoso and therefore easy to park the car. Our room was quite spacious. Breakfast is served on a nicely situated terrace with stunning view of the town. Great for aperitif in the evening. For dinner, I heartily recommend Soul Kitchen, exceptional Ribeye (Podolica) and Pannacotta with orange infused olive oil. Make sure you take a guided walking tour to really get to know Matera.
It was a real adventure sleeping in a cave room! The staff were very friendly and helpful before we arrived in providing transportation options for getting to the hotel. We chose the Damasco parking garage, which provides a shuttle to the hotel and pickup on departure, and were glad we had. The breakfast was excellent, and we enjoyed eating outside in the courtyard. The hotel is situated in an ideal location for exploring Matera.
Only four rooms but an outstanding ‘caveman’ dwelling! Beautifully restored/developed blending the original cave with modern amenities. Perfect location for exploring Matera. If driving highly recommend the park and shuttle service that avoids the need to park in the city and cart luggage. Shuttle drops you yards from the hotel. Excellent breakfast and great hosts.
The staff was so kind. The rooms were beautiful. We arranged an airport shuttle through the hotel. The driver stopped at many viewpoints in Matera before bringing us to the hotel. He and his colleague were so excited to share the history with us. There were a lot of steps to get to the hotel and they carried our bags for us. They definitely made it easy! Great hotel.
The hotel staff are exceptional. The location is 5 minutes from the Matera sassi. The room is very spacious and clean and the bed is so comfortable! There is complimentary water and coffee in the room which is a nice touch. On check out the receptionist gave us a free bag with water ad snacks. Top class hotel!
This hotel is simply amazing! The room was very large, beautifully decorated. The view to Sassi was so nice. The breakfast was absolutely delicious. And the aperitivos we had were soooo nice, accompanied by huge amount of various snacks. This place made our stay at Matera magical!
The bedroom was stunning, set in one of Matera’s caves. Lovely large bed and modern bathroom. Great location for access to Matera city and all the sight seeing we wanted to do. We ate at the hotel restaurant one night which was very very good too. Staff could not do enough for us.
The staff was very kind and friendly, and assisted us with booking dinner, tours etc.
The hotel itself is really amazing, built inside caves and with fancy decoration.
Breakfast was the best we had during our trip to Italy.
Cozy hotel in the heart of Matera old town. Perfect location. Beautiful rooms. Friendly staff. Tasty breakfast and aperitivo. We loved everything! The wine degustation experience is highly recommended.
Boutique cave hotel with attention to detail. Great location in the Sassi with walking distance to sites and restaurants. Fantastic young brother/sister team that we’re beyond fun and helpful.
If you are in Matera, it is most definitely worth it to stay in a cave hotel in the sassi. A truly unique experience. The room was gorgeous, staff welcoming, location wonderful!
Staff was very nice and helpful. Location couldn't be beat with amazing views of Matera. Was a true Matera experience with hotel being built into the cliff.
